  • I think things are being a bit over analyzed.

Sloppy ball handling + bad shooting = a loss against any good defensive team.
The bad shooting is and can be attributed to Alabama's defense which is as good if not the best we will see all year. Toure was the only one with the balls to drive to the bucket and Carl Hall was banging like his life depended on it.
Garrett was taken completely of his game primarily because of how physical it was with the foul trouble. at one point we had everyone on the perimeter with only one or two Alabama players in the middle. Pissed me off to holy hell but I cant be too mad because if he farted they were blowing the whistle. Pretty proud of him for hanging in there the way he did.

      • Watched the replay today. The second foul that was called on GS was supposedly a push in the back of Bama's big Sweede. There was no push. The flop in the lane was the 4th foul called on GS.

To say that those call's didn't change the game is.....H.S.

I am in no way saying we would have beaten them but I would have liked to have seen the outcome with GS on the court instead of the bench.

        • Unless Marshall is willing to start drawing some early Ts by making noise defending Stutz, I am afraid you better get used to it.

          • The push in the back was good. 2 hands extended in the back with displacement is a foul every time. there was definitely displacement. no arguments about that call. Both teams got away with several travels, and I don't think the officials got one block/charge call right all game. There were several out of bounds calls that i thought should have went the other way, a few on both ends. In the end, both teams got away with some stuff, so it was pretty even. The officials sure didn't cost WSU this game. WSU did that on their own by not knowing how to break a press, committing stupid turnovers, jacking up three pointers. This kind of offense is not going to get it done. They've got to get better in a hurry.

              Agree to disagree.

              • For the record I'm not defending the officials, they were terrible. But it went both ways, not just against us. I can understand a few bad calls because nobody is perfect, but when you are that inconsistent on both sides, it makes me wonder how some of these guys get to officiate a D1 game. Not that I can say much because they are obviously there for a reason and I'm not.

I just hope that this WSU team can pick it up and find a post presence. Stutz is good when he's given a chance, but more often than not, he's not given a chance, and that's too bad because he has improved a lot.

                  I totally agree with this.

One of Bama's player went right over TM's back for a jam. It was impressive but there was too much contact on that play. TM probably should have went up stronger than he did but there was a lot of contact and TM did not initiate it.

The call on Releford on the sideline appeared bogus too just to be fair.

                  • Watched the game last night and like everyone else greatly disappointed in the results. I haven't taken the time to read all 19 pages of this thread so forgive me if my observations have been made and seconded. The fouls that GS got seemed small compared to the hacking and bumping going on around the perimeter by bama. I thought the guard positions were suppossed to be our strength but it looked like bama dictated the game from their guard play and defense. Our guards weren't able to deal with their physicality (is this even a word?) I was more displeased with our guard play than the other aspects except maybe the free throw shooting. Like I said this may have been hashed over ad nauseum earlier in the thread but this is just my nickels worth.

                    • I dunno why they do not call the hacking and bumping on the perimeter, but KU makes a living doing that.

                      • I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, this is my first post on the forum although I have followed Greg Marshall since his early Winthrop days and starting watching Wichita State last year. The problems I saw are many of what other people have listed but one that I don't see that I have seen in the past 2 games is

                        1. Our guards cannot penetrate or draw fouls...period...they cannot do it...we got into the bonus plenty early this game and threw up some really horrible 3 point attempts. We could have done so much better to drive the lane in desperation than throw up the 3 in desperation. I have seen almost 0 dribble penetration in the past 2 games (wasn't looking before than) and I mean...not even a tiny itty bit of dribble penetration. I would have much much rather seen our guards drive the basket and throw up a shot that air-balled (in the lane) with 5 seconds left on the shot clock than throw up a well defended three from 6 ft behind the arc off one foot. We could have drawn 5-8 more fouls this game, gotten Alabama in a lot more foul trouble, and had a lot more free throw attempts while slowing the game down even more to allow more time to adjust to their pressure defense...

IMO Drive the lane with only a 10% chance of making the shot but a good chance of drawing a foul instead of throwing up a 15-20% three pointer off one foot at the end of the shot clock

Maybe I am wrong about this but it seemed like a huge hole in Wichita's game and I have not seen it discussed much yet.

                        • No doubt this team lacks a "slasher" that can get to the cup but I would also say that being on the receiving end of 14 erases does tend to discourage the dribble drive.

                          • I will say that Oglesby had a poor game. No consistency this game in the officiating. Our bad calls went against Garrett. Their bad calls went against people that didn't matter. That always hurts.

Also, even though the effort was there from most of the team, execution was definitely lacking and there were a number of WTH moments during play.

                            • Toure has been driving to the hoop on occasion. In fact he is averaging 14 pts per game and only has 21 monutes per game so far! He also has over 4 rebounds per game.

If you double his minutes per game you are approaching Kemba Walker territory statistically. We need to see a LOT more of Toure.
