The freshmen guards, TC, RB and EW, are physically and mentally ready to go. However, as Gregg said on the post game show, "where are the minutes going to come from". Carl did his thing, Garrett did his thing, EO showed he can be a player. JA looked better than he did at Madness, White looked worse. Not worried, both can fill in with minutes when needed. Ben didn't play a lot in the first half, started the second and looked ready to go. Veterans in the backcourt were solid. ESU was way outsized. Need to take steps forward on Sunday.Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

My thoughts on red shirts:
PG - Rags / Williams / Cotton
2/3 - Murry / Kyles / Smith / Williams
PF - Hall / Anacreon / White(??)
Post - Stutz / Orukpe / Hall
Leave White out of that and it's a 10-deep rotation. Cotton seems to be the key to opening up Williams for more minutes at the 2, so he's (IMHO) the least likely to RS.
The coaches are still talking about RS'ing 1 or 2 players. Baker is obvious and Wessel seems to be the next option. The coaches aren't mentioning 3, so White is probably not in consideration.
Next year's Fr class is starting to look pretty salty. VanVleet is one of the higher ranked recruits WSU has had in a long time - and he was probably underrated. Uwadiae is a project, but he was borderline to be a BCS project. Throw Baker and Wessel with a year of physical and mental maturity into that class. That class is looking to be on the level of the Murry/Kyles/Stutz class or the Braeuer/Ogirri/Cooz class. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

First half kinda blew. Kind of expected with a lot of crazy lineups and fine-tuning. Second half was where the intensity picked up. Very impressed with the defense the second half starter threw at ESU. Stutz is going to be a first-teamer. I can just feel it already. He is just a smart player and he's got some very good passing skills. That'll be a nice addition to already his scoring under the basket.
Rags is definitely the KEY to this team. He is a leader and when he turns the engines on he will FLY past you. His one spurt to the hoop in the second half reminded me of the road runner. He will lead this team nicely.
Hall is an animal. And is everything we need out of that position. Not flashy. Inhales rebounds and has an excellent free throw stroke. I'm liking him a lot. Definitely has a lot of Blair in him.
Cotton is a defensive juggernaut. I was impressed with his athleticism and tenacity.
Smith was quiet but did the little things as always. He has a sweet stroke and will be a big help. I really think he deserves a starting spot.
The freshmen were jittery at first but didn't act like they came right out of high school. That's gonna be a tough decision for coach but I was impressed with all of them. White, Wessel, and Baker are the foundation for a GREAT future.
Kyles was quiet but under control. He will also be a factor on our team.
The only real negative I felt was EO. He had some nice swats and good defense but his offense is just not there. I'm just not seeing it with him. He can't hit his throws, he fumbles passes. I just dunno with him. I have a feeling we're gonna be playing small a lot more than we're gonna play big. As far as I'm concerned, he's still in project mode and there are freshmen that are up the chart ahead of him..
Overall, I left feeling good about the team. Can't wait for Sunday when it's for real. This team has loads of potential if they follow the system and are unselfish. I really, REALLY like this team though. I'm just gonna leave it at that right now, considering it was Emporia State and a practice game.Last edited by ShockerFever; November 8, 2011, 11:05 PM.Deuces Valley.

Rags: Has received HCGM's message. Him and Antoine Young will fight it out for All-MVC.
Williams: Solid game, but the third best PG on the team. Nice pull up jumper, didn't looked as rushed as we are accustomed to seeing from him.
Kyles: Didn't play much. I just hope I can take the label "shooting specialist" away from him this season.
Stutz: Great poise on both ends...missed a couple of "bunnies," but this will be his year.
Hall: Gabe who (no offense Gabe)...a beast of a post player and a great rebounder on both ends (7 offensie boards tonight.
Orukpe: Still weak with his handles, but a rebounding machine and an intimidator. Just give us 10-12 minutes.
Cotton: The second best PG we have. Has poise beyond his freshman status. Has a nose for the ball and has a nice mid-range stroke.
Wessel: Like Cotton, played with nice poise usually reserved for upper classmen. His long-range stroke looks smooth.
White: Liability on defense...just looked lost. He does have a nice baseline jumper and has range beyond the arc.
Anacreon: Didn't go to Brazile and missed some other practice time...it showed.
Only worry is depth at 4/5. White and Anacreon need to catch up. When that happens...Katie bar the door!!!

@Downtown Shocker Brown: gave a great player-by-player recap.
I'll add a few more opinions.
I want more out of Stutz. I want "NIT Champion Stutz" EVERY game. I don't want "not stepping on short guys and not making the gimmies Mr. nice guy Stutz" back anymore. I want NBA prospect Stutz. I'll leave it at that.
When the seniors were in with DWill, our team looked like an NIT championship team pissed off that they weren't in the dance last year. That squad could have put the score at 100 to 33 if left in all game. And I am not exaggerating. Did I mention Murry wasnt part of that line-up?
It was a terrible mismatch, however, and we shouldn't read too much into it until we see a few more games of D1 competition.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

Personally, I thought Jake looked the weakest of the 4 freshman. His defense needs a lot of work and I'm not sure he is physically ready to bang inside. OTOH we need depth at his position.
I though EO finally showed signs that he is starting to figure things out. He will need to shoot his free throws better but his touch and feel from the line looks to be much improved. He will be more than adequate on the baords and defensively. In the second half 3G had EO playing the point in a half court trapping defense. Not sure he would do that with Garrett.
The redshirt decision will be tough. Baker, Cotton and Wessel all looked pretty good. Tekele probably the steadiest and least likely to hurt you. We have to keep in mind that Toure did not play. As 3G said in his post game show they need to decide how many minutes will be available and weight that agaisnt burning a year of eligibility for perhaps a relatively few minutes a year is worth it.
I though Anacreon showed some signs that he can be a contributor although he looked a little sped up tonight.
Stutz missed a few easy shots early but otherwise looked pretty good. Had 3 or 4 very nice passes and a couple of nice outlet passes. His one-hand slam on the baseline inbounds play was a very aggressive move. Carl Hall is simply a ball-getter and a surprisingly good FT shooter. Rags, D-Will, Ben and DK all were very solid. DK did not put up big numbers but he played very much under control and played solid defense for the most part.
I give the Shocks a C+ for the first half (thanks to a late burst) and a A- for the second half. Considering the amount of minutes played by EO and the newcomers I would think 3G has to be satisified with the 39 point win.

Jake had 4 fouls in very limited minutes and could not keep his man in front of him. I am being kind in that description. Cotton and Wessel were extremely impressive. They could rotate right now. EO is better, but this may be as good as he gets. I would hate that. James A has a ways to go, but there are signs. Really, the biggest things I took away from the roundhouse was the readiness of Cotton and the ineptitude of White. Really surprising. Drove through a hellish blizzard for about 20 miles, btw.
