Last year JB was a 70% FT shooter.

Not in January. He was at roughly 58% this time last year.

I'd wager he finishes this season at roughly 70%. Hopefully he shoots many today and makes them all.

Burton's D is starting to really stand out, which is really saying something considering he plays on a team known for outstanding D.

Exactly. Sometimes when we are focusing on JB free throw shooting woes, etc, we forget he is one of the best defenders on the team. The job he did on Austin R was outstanding. Not to mention what he did to the VCU guards. I clearly remember the job he did on JC for Cincy last year at their place. JB has a lot of overall skills and talent. I hope he keeps improving. Go Shocks.

now we're in moneyball stats territory. You'd have to watch and log all games and start developing detailed stats to come to any conclusions. Sort of like a hard hit ball that was caught versus a little blooper that falls for a single. I bet the NBA has guys that look at this stuff.

Wichita State Basketball: 2019-20 takeaways from impressive win over Memphis - FanSided Sports

"Wichita State Basketball earned its biggest win of the season on Thursday night over the Memphis Tigers in a ranked matchup.

In a game that wasn’t nearly as competitive as the final score showed, the 23rd ranked Wichita State Basketball was able to take down No. 21 Memphis at home. The Shockers got out to fast start in the game, taking a 3-0 lead just 10 seconds in that they would never relinquish. They pushed the lead as high as 19 in the second half before Memphis made a late comeback, getting the game back to within 6 before the Shockers shut the door on them, eventually winning 76-67. For Memphis, the loss puts them on their first losing streak of the year. However, they probably won’t drop too far in the rankings thanks to every team behind them besides the Shockers also losing this week. Now they’ll look to right the ship when they head to Florida for a Sunday afternoon game against USF.

The win extends the Shocker streak to eight games since their only loss of the season. This puts them in a great position in the AAC as they took down the team who was seen as the favorite to win the conference. They’ll need to avoid a letdown on Sunday as they head to Connecticut to take on the UCONN Huskies. If they can do that, they should see themselves continue to climb the rankings. This couldn’t have gone much better for the Shockers. They’ve already taken down their toughest opponent early in the conference schedule. Now, if they can just avoid an unforeseen stumble in the rest of their schedule, the Shockers could be in position for their highest NCAA tournament seed in years.

The Shockers’ Balance is Their Best Weapon
One of the main things I look for in an NCAA contender is well-roundedness. For most of the year, good teams can win by being dominant in a couple of facets of the game and just beating other teams’ strengths with their own. However, once we hit March, you need to be good enough everywhere that you can take advantage of any opponent’s weaknesses. Wichita State appears to be a team that fits the bill....

Wichita State has an Elite Defense
I was extremely impressed by the way that Wichita State’s defense played in this game. We knew going into the game against Memphis that they were a very good defense, but what we saw in this game should put them in the conversation of best defenses in the country. It’s not just that the Shockers held a Memphis offense that was amongst the nation’s highest-scoring offenses 12 points below their season average, but it’s the way that they did it. They managed to hold Memphis to their 4th lowest score of the season in spite of dealing with a ton of foul trouble in the first half. That foul trouble also led to Memphis scoring a 3rd of their points from the free throw line....

The Shockers are the Real Deal
Before this game, there was still room to doubt just how good Wichita State really was. They lost their only game against a top 25 team and only had two wins over teams who are even in the discussion to crack the rankings. Now, they have a win over a team that was in the top 10 just a week ago. In fact, if a shorthanded Memphis hadn’t lost to Georgia, we’d probably be talking about this win launching Wichita State into at least the top 15...."

"2. Shockers knock off Memphis
Even without James Wiseman, Memphis has a roster that can compete for an AAC championship. The Tigers ripped off a series of wins without the potential No. 1 NBA draft pick, both before and after he decided to hang up his sneakers for the season. Wins against N.C. State and Tennessee are enough to believe in Penny Hardaway’s team even without the stellar freshman. These Tigers still have a chance.

But they’re not the frontrunners.

Wichita State looks to have staked a claim to that status with their 76-67 win over the Tigers on Thursday night at Koch Arena. The Shockers led by as many as 19 points despite shooting just 32.8 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from the 3-point line. They did it thanks to 35 trips to the free-throw line and a defense that produced 18 turnovers and held the Tigers to 35.7 percent from the floor while going a ghastly 4 of 21 from 3-point range. Gregg Marshall’s team had six players score at least eight points while Jamarius Burton led the way with 16.

Wichita State is now 2-0 in the American with the best league win across the conference to date. They’re just a little more than a week away from butting heads with another – probably their chief – AAC contender, Houston, in Wichita."

"Head coach Gregg Marshall is working with a very young roster but everybody seems to be connected on the defensive end of the floor. That is easier said than done and Coach Marshall deserves consideration as an early candidate for the National Coach of the Year award as a result. Wichita State, in my opinion, is now the clear favorite to win the AAC. Houston and Memphis could both be solid contenders for the title behind them but I lean in favor of the Shockers moving forward."

AAC Basketball power rankings: Wichita State rises to the top - FanSided Sports

"A wild opening two weeks in AAC Basketball means there’s a new top dog in the Power Rankings, let’s recap what happened and see where teams stand early on.

I’m not really sure what just happened these past two weeks, lots of surprises across the board means there will be a big shakeup in the AAC Basketball rankings. Memphis lost two games since the last rankings were released to Georgia and Wichita, and managed to scrape by South Florida after trailing big. They’ll have to relinquish their top spot and we’ll have a new number one.

After game one it looked like Cincinnati was about to hit their stride before losing to Tulane and all of a sudden Temple doesn’t look good at all. A wild opening two weeks and we’ll get into what happened with each team in more detail later. The AAC at the time of writing this has two teams in the top 25 with Wichita at 23 and Memphis at 21. Wichita should move up while Memphis drops out, Houston received votes but it’s likely after falling to Tulsa that they’ll stay put. If things continue and teams continue to beat up on each other the AAC may only be looking at two bids.

Want to highlight a few guys that have started out really well in conference play, Jayden Gardner may be the best player in the conference, he kept ECU in the game against Wichita and has put up a few monster 20 points 10 rebound stat lines. Chris Vogt has been fantastic with Cincinnati to start conference play putting up 66 points in his first four games. Lots of shakeup and lots of explaining to do, I’ll recap how teams have started off conference play, as well as highlight more big performances and look ahead to the next few weeks for teams.

The Shockers are number one and deservedly so. They dominated the game against Memphis coming away with a nine-point win at home. Wichita State has lost one game and is at 14-1 quickly moving up the national rankings. There was a bit of a scare on Sunday after a late run from UConn saw the Shockers take until double overtime to put the Huskies away to remain perfect in conference play. Echenique had a season-high 19 in that game.

Erik Stevenson has been so good for Greg Marshall in his sophomore campaign averaging 14 points per game so far. The freshman Tyson Etienne has come in and made an immediate impact as he’s moved his way into a starting spot. Tyson has had two back to back big games with 11 points against Memphis and 16 against UConn. He’ll only get better. Jamarius Burton has also earned himself a starting spot and has taken advantage of it. He has been a double-digit scorer in six games. There’s a lot of depth with Wichita and a lot of guys getting minutes. Greg Marshall has built himself a good team and after that game against Memphis, it was clear they’re the best team in the conference right now.

Wichita has a midweek game with Temple before a huge clash with Houston at home on the weekend."
