There were 3 guys sitting one row below Lynn on the opposite side of her section. At some point, best as I've been able to learn from people near and close, he loudly questioned a substitution pattern. Gregg got wind of it (how I have no idea) and started motioning for him to come down and make the decisions himself if it's so easy. That quickly turned into a challenge to "let's go, I'm ready" and a constant stare down for oh, about the next 15 minutes of real time when the lead went from 20 to 10.

Lynn then got involved. I believe the owner of Stroud's then made himself available to suggest those guys leave. Soon after they departed to the delight of most of the people in the invited guest section. As Jack Buck once opined, I can't believe what I just saw!

I say this only as someone that picked up what was going around the concourse, but it may have been a former basketball manager. I do not want to disparage the wrong individual.

Not the same people wusphlash. Guessing GM agreed with the in game production criticism.

Yah, I'm not sure Marshall should be worried about a random fan comment (that probably wasn't that far-fetched as I too am perplexed by some of his sub patterns) during the middle of a basketball game. Something about the opinions of sheep..

I guess on the flip side, to play devil's advocate, you need to know your place and where you're at during a game, especially if you're in the middle of hardcore diehard section, and are sitting in invited guest seats.

IF, and I stress IF, it was someone formerly associated with the program, and probably given tickets by the basketball office to sit where they were, I understand the annoyance with the lack of loyalty. Loyalty is a BIG word in the coaching world, perhaps the biggest. And if there's been history regarding the comment by wusphlash, then even more so.

Still, the optics were not good, at all.

I would imagine if this was someone invited to sit in the section, that invitation will not be given again.

      Back to the game.......

I thought we were a little unlucky tonight. Felt like the guys played with a lot of energy and for the most part played smart. We continue to be more aggressive taking the ball to the cup. Had a bunch of good shots rattle in and out. Rebounds that we were in good position for just go the wrong way. Odd fouls that caused unusual rotations.

Won by 15. Won by 15. Won by FIFTEEN. Not 10, or 9, or 8...FIFTEEN.

JB was strong until a little frustration set it. Ricky Torres was excellent. McDuffie was all league again. Solid stride forward. This is an entertaining team.

You probably could have got good money betting on any 15 point wins after the USF game.

Overall good game. We just fouled too much. I would like to see Dexter be more consistent. Maybe he was too amped up with all of his people there. Let's figure out a way to get the next one at Cincinnati.

Glad to see IPBC gets some minutes tonight. He is a good substitution against opposing centers that can stretch the floor. Thanks for inforation on AM being a little sick.

Very true. I'm out of town and so didn't see the incident, but why on earth would a coach be paying attention to buffoonery in the stands anyway? I love 3G and hope he retires a Shocker, but especially with this team -- doesn't he have enough to pay attention to ON the court?

Whatever. Any fan that gets the attention of the head coach to that degree and escalated it to an obvious "personal" level needs to be escorted out by security. How was this not done? I mean if people noticed this in the stands...then security surely did as well. Wth man???

Fans make suggestions all of the time. Coaches shouldn’t “hear” it. I would have to know a lot more to assume coach getting distracted was the fans fault.

Gotta jump in. No, not "whatever." You can't shrug off Gregg's juvenile preoccupation with comments coming from the stands during a game, or Lynn's (yet again) eagerness to join the fray which does absolutely nothing to resolve or deescalate the situation. To exacerbate this particular event, it wasn't just a stare-down and some gestures, Gregg was hurling explatives into the stands for all to hear. NOT acceptable. Not "whatever." Should never happen from anyone immediately associated with the team (or school for that matter) and certainly not the head coach. He could have asked a school official or told a manager to fetch security to deal with it. I get loyalty, how very important it is; if these fans were formerly associated with the team then deal with that issue after the game. Sanction them however you want at that point. A very regrettable Marshall(s) moment, in my opinion. This all took off when he substituted for AM seconds after being put in and drawing his 3rd foul. Yeah he was out of position and over the back during a rebound... and we were up by about 20 well into the 2nd half. AM needs all the floor time he can get and he's earned it, that was not a situation where Gregg needed to get yet more deeply into AM's head. Use the film room to point those things out and let game time be game time. In my opinion, of course!

              Thoughts from the game:
a layup here, a tip in there... this is easy a25-30 point win
poor Mike Dunleavy... from coaching elite players to ragtag college kids
i loved seeing IPBC get some minutes and being serviceable....
The Marshalls, bless them all, are not wired like other coaching families... they are probably always going to be lightening rods for goofball situations
good expexted win... good four game run... now back to big boy ball

                1. Our freshmen are up and down but continue to grind, get experience and show progress. All have
some really good stretches and then some bad ones. As they get more consistently good so will we.
                2. RT looked more confident last night.
                3. Came down on a 2-1 fast break once last night and SHJ took it right at two bigger players when he
had ES wide open. Missed the shot attempt badly but I think he got bailed out with a foul call. Give it up !
                4. Overall, about what I expected last night including minutes for IC but I thought they would be JE's
                5. Have to have good games from everyone next Sunday...........tall order but I like our direction

We sit across from the bench in 104 about 1/2 way up. I usually pay a lot of attention to the bench for the entertainment value. FWIW, I didn't notice this exchange at all last night. Crazy stuff.

Man, how did you miss this one? lol Of all the "entertainment" to miss...and it went on for so long.

In fairness, sitting across from the bench you wouldn't have been able to see what Gregg was saying, or mouthing, so it easily could have gone unnoticed if not for having his back turned to the game for long stretches of time.

As Wudrwu has said numerous times on this forum, if you don't keep one eye on GM during games you are not getting full value from your entertainment dollar!

I was close enough to know what was going on. Fan yelled something about getting Asbjorn in the game. Nothing any D1 coach shouldn't expect to hear . I found it beyond odd he got so irate about it . Didn't help that Lynn wouldn't let it go and kept yelling at the fan .

One of the most bizarre things I've seen at a sporting event .

That's why I speculate, based on other reports, that the person has a history with the program.

                • #89
Coach should have sent Asbjorn up to the stands to ask if the guy has a problem.

About last night’s game, had to watch it on replay late last night. Couldn’t tell if SHJ was shooting air balls or getting everything blocked, but he was really bad. It looked like Tulane had some length on the perimeter that was giving him problems. Markis was good, forced a few, but He was the difference in the game last night. Dennis played good D again, probably is not getting enough recognition for this because it’s not showing up in the stats. I do get tired of hearing about how awesome he is though, and how’s he’s the next NBA player. He is a LONG way from deserving this level of praise. I would be happy if he could just play good D and make the open shots for now. With a week off, I would not be surprised to see us give Cincy a run for their money next weekend, we’re cutting down on the turnovers, now we just gotta have a clean game from everyone and we could have a chance.
