From what I understand they are less of a scrimmage and more of a structure set of situational drills

I am talking about something like KU vs MU last season- that was not a slowed down structured event.
What a great opportunity to play someone like Creighton in KC

That was a one-time deal for hurricane relief.

I wanna see games like that for real, not some meaningless exhibition.

"NCAA rulesmakers misfire with rule hiding scrimmages behind veil of secrecy' - The Sporting News

          By Mike DeCourcy
          Published on Oct. 31, 2016

There is no logical reason a sport so starved for media attention should have a rule in place that mandates across-the-board secrecy regarding a practice competition between two Division I teams.

"...According to NCAA rules passed in 2005, Division I members can trade one or both of their allotted exhibition games against non-D-I opponents for a scrimmage “provided they are conducted in privacy without publicity or official scoring. Individuals other than athletics department staff members and those necessary to conduct a basketball scrimmage against outside competition may not be present during such a scrimmage.”..."

Barring big upsets, not much to learn from that list except from the Cincy, UCF, and WSU games.

It's the first game of the season, nothing to worry about. Unless ECU or USF lose.

Green Bay (Horizon League) chalks up the first win of the 2018-19 season with a win over Wisconsin Lutheran (NCAA DIII), 110 to 54 this afternoon.

This is basically how schools circumvent the combined limit of 2 closed scrimmages or 2 exhibition games or 1 of each. Just schedule another exhibition game as part of your regular season schedule. In fact, this game was a much easier opponent then Green Bay's exhibition game opponent. Green Bay set a school record with 26 steals in this game although if they had any pride they wouldn't count it.

Most of the time the D1 schools do not want to schedule these games and they only end up happening due to being unable to find a home opponent for a certain date or negotiations falling through late in the scheduling process. Sure it is a bad look for a D1 team to be playing non-D1 competition in regular season games, but even our own Shockers have played Newman and Emporia State in regular season games in the past 5 or so years

That's true. I don't think it is so much not being able to find a home opponent per se but it can be about finding an acceptable D-1 opponent who is not an RPI killer. But the bottom line is that regardless of motivation they are essentially additional exhibition games that count on your record but not on your RPI. At least the Shockers typically would schedule a D-II team and not a D-III team or an NAIA team (if that is even allowed for the regular season).
