Why one shoe company and one school. Was it a matter that this one scenario was the lowest hanging fruit with heights odds of success and other guilty shoe companies and universities were able to avoid the public display of the equally agregious abuses?

This is no different than a booster paying a player. Boosters give money to the program. Shoe companies give money to the program.
At this point, it all comes down to whether the school knew about it. If that cant be 'proven' then KU will not be punished.
At the very minimum, players involved should be ruled ineligible and the NCAA moves on with a stern 'warning' to all.....
"Guys, be more discreet. Hold your meetings in cars in parking garages. Are we clear? Ok, good. Now knock it off, let's go tell the country how clean we are and that money is bad. That's the same as if your boss at work retired, and your boss's boss gave you "approve/disapprove" decision-making in hiring your next boss. That's also why KU will NEVER have a football program. When the basketball coach is actually higher than the AD in the power structure at the university, that university will never get a football coach with any recognizable amount of self-respect.
Another way to run a program and be "clean": Instead of a $100,000 payment up front, just give their father $80,000 a year plus "expenses". I wonder how long the Lawson's dad's contract runs for. By the time they hired Daddy, KU probably already knew the deal with Adidas was blowing up. You gotta have a Plan B ready to go into action. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

That is no different than the carpet cleaning or Mohs surgery groups. They are boosters. If a booster gives money to an athlete, directly or indirectly, it is an NCAA violation and the school/coach knew or should have known about it, otherwise it is lack of instuitutional control.

Coaches should never have any contact with any company representative unless the coach and company are contractually linked outside of the coach's official capacity as a athletic department employee. That is, Marshall should have no contact with Under Armor (the AD's office can handle that) reps, but can with All Angles (I think that's the right one), as he does commercials for them.

It would seem fairly easy to make a case that the NCAA is involved in "fixing" college basketball. If anyone were ever to challenge the NCAA on that subject, the P5 schools would use the opportunity to immediately pull out of that corrupt organization. Then they would show the rest of college athletics how corruption is really done.
There's litle doubt the NCAA favors their money makers to the detriment of about 320 or 330 other colleges. Unfortunately, that's probably the best deal those 320 or 330 can ever hope to have.
It's a bit ironic that only college sports ("amateur" athletes) don't have salary caps, but all the pros do.Last edited by Aargh; October 26, 2018, 12:02 PM.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

This is the best and most important quote in that article.
The biggest booster of Kansas athletics is Adidas. Adidas invests millions in the program, Adidas has direct access to the basketball coach and Adidas is the one that paid the players that Kansas coaches told Adidas it wanted. If that’s not a blatant recruiting violation, then there are no blatant recruiting violations. The NCAA might as well fire its enforcement staff.
