Fair enough. Don't get me wrong I love me some Austin, but Landry will be back, Duff will return and a bunch of 4-stars will continue to play Marshall basketball, which is balance, balance, balance.

Even if Landry and Duff are gone he's not averaging 20.

Not going to engage in a pissing match but I'd like to understand why someone thinks this would happen. It just doesn't under GM's system.

While I’m excited to see another Shocker in an NBA uniform, I would be more than excited to have Shamet and Duff back next year.

        • I wouldn't have a problem saying next year if Austin gets 20-30 minutes a game he will average 16ppg.

          Comment

          • I wouldn't say Austin couldn't average 20. I mean Landry was averaging over 16 until his slump.

            1) Austin is a more willing shooter than Landry.
            2) Depending on who returns he may have to carry a serious load.
            3) If Lomax is who we hope he is Austin will be playing with a true pass first point guard.
            4) Very, very inexperienced inside presence.

I agree Gregg's teams are typically built on balance but never say never. Gregg's teams are usually built on defense as well but this year is all about the O.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

            • GGG's teams are also built on *winning* and I have a feeling if scoring is what is needed, Reaves can provide it. lol

              • I vote we never play zone again. The only thing worse than our man to man defense is our zone defense.

It is poor for sure. And we do it for odd reasons.

Agree, the Fesno that we attempted vs SMU was not executed like it was taught in practice 4-5 years ago. The guards are supposed to be on a rubberband with one on the ball and the othe rin the FT line circle. We had the off-ball guard crossing over behind the ball pressure guard, very late in the sequence. Not smooth at all.

pinstripers you guys aren’t wrong about his current status. I don’t he on any scouts radar right now.

But he has a size/ability combo that is highly sought after at the NBA level. Somebody was in his ear after his sophomore year after an okay year and a no-show against Kentucky. He tested the waters without an agent which he can only do once. If he plays well in the tourney, whoever was in his ear last year will definitely be in his ear again.
You can test the waters twice. This is why Landry didn't do it last year. Once after the Soph and Junior years.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Gregg’s team is losing his two “defensive stoppers” who have zero offensive skill. Unless we have some 4s and 5s step on big time, we are going to be forced to suburban HORSE it unlike anything Gregg’s career has come even close to seeing. His “system” will hopefully have a major overhaul next year or we’re gonna get owned.

                    • If he does average 20 then that's probably not a good sign for things to come and I don't think that's where we're heading.

Contact me me if anyone wants to engage in a healthy wager. I'm game.

I don’t think Reaves will average 20 but I don’t think a player averaging 20 is impossible under Marshall anymore.

I think it may be possible that the leading scorer of each game will average 20 or more, but I don't think that any individual player will average 20.

                        From NCAA website:

Basketball student-athletes may enter a professional league’s draft once during their college career without jeopardizing their eligibility as long as they are not drafted by a professional team and as long as they declare their intention to resume playing for their college team before the first day of the spring signing period, typically in April.

guess I was wrong. Could have sworn I saw something in the Eagle last year from Paul where he said they could do the pre draft evaluations twice where they could meet with various teams to better understand their prospects.

I had to double check. The fact you can only go once is why I was surprised Duff tossed his name in last year. I felt it was too early.

Baker averaged 11 shot attempts in 32 minutes as the #1 scoring option his junior and senior year. Reaves is averaging 10 attempts (70% of those from 3) in 27 minutes since the Tulsa game as the arguably the #2 option behind Shaq. And that’s on a team with Frankamp and Machine Gun Willis. He’s a much more efficient scorer than Baker and IMO, much more willing shooter.

His minutes and shot attempts are going up next year regardless if Duff and Shamet come back. If Duff and Shamet leave, 15+ attempts a game is possible. If the splits remain fairly consistent (70% from 3) and he regresses in percentage made to say 45% (back of career avg), that still about 14 points on 3s alone. Reaves is an elite scorer at this level. In just watching games, he seems to have more freedom in the offense to take shots more than anyone on the court. No way that changes next year.

                        • Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but we will be seeing SMU on Fri in Orlando with Shake Milton. That game scares me. The number 1 seed will have a much easier semi final opponent, but will first have to face SMU with Shake. Yes, I'm assuming we beat Cincinnati next Sunday and quite honestly I feel a lot more certain of that then beating SMU on Fri.

I doubt Shake Milton is coming back, and even if he does he hasn't shot a basketball in a month.

well, they love playing in wichita.. all of them. smu no less.

even though a good conference, with scattered pro potential all around, this is the closest they will get to an ACC environment. they love to come in here. and take advantage of it.
