Beating a 125ish RPI team helps the final RPI by several spots.

I'll take the option with the upside.
I don't believe winning a game is going to drop our RPI 7 - 10 spots. If anything it might drop 1 spot or stay the same.

    Some figures you're missing:

    2 games vs 100 - 125 RPI team: HOME & HOME = ($210,000 - travel expenses) for WSU

    2 games vs cupcake: 2 games @ CKA = ($420,000 - buyouts) for WSU

So in 2 games vs cupcakes, WSU walks away with $100k - $200k more in hand.

Am I advocating we play a cupcake schedule...no, but those figures must be taken into account.

If we are ever going to become a consistent top 50 program, somewhere down the line we are going to have to bite the bullet and drop the exceptionally weak cupcakes.

How much does an NCAA tournament game bring in?

Respectfully disagree. Late in the season last year, beating a #229 Bradley team dropped our RPI 4 spots in the MVC tournament. 7~10 spots is a fair guesstimate for a 300-330 RPI team.

The revenue argument is definitely something to be factored in.

But not at the expense of the program moving forward. And there's a lot more money to be made by making the NCAAs and winning. And more than just game money.

Sorry, SF, but I'll add another potential revenue maker. WSU and the "right team" might get additional TV exposure, not primetime stuff, but secondary time slots or additional regions. Good for both schools involved.

I would think the difference between 2 cupcakes at home vs. 1 cupcake at home and a road start to a home and home is only the revenue that concessions brings in. For instance, i've already paid my season tickets price for this year. I have no idea if we will have 18 or 17 home games. In the past they have not credited or asked for more money after finalizing the schedule.

But again ST, what are the chances of that happening? Do those pluses outweigh the minuses?

If that happened every year and we had a good trend for those types of deals, then I'd be all for holding out. But again, how often has that happened with us? Especially in a home and home situation? Im guessing it's been a while.

AG makes a great point too.

Don't disagree, SF. However, to get that trend going, you have to start somewhere. At least the iron is warm.

I was looking at anything that might help make up for any revenue shortfall. Sub and I have said time after time that you only lose one home game, every other year, and AG is spot on.

The difference between two home cupcakes and a home-away series isn't going to change the price of a season ticket. The only revenue difference in that scenario is walk-up sales, which are low for cupcakes, and concessions.

Whether the last game is an away game to start a home-away, or a home game against a cupcake, ticket revenues are very close to the same.

The BCS argument that it's financial disaster to schedule a home-and-home against a mid breaks down the same way. It's only a financial loss if season ticket prices are based on the number of home games played. I don't think any schools use that pricing system because season tickets are sold before schedules are final.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
