  • another home game

not sure if we're still a game short, but the following schools are looking for a home and home:

    texas tech
    miami of ohio
    dayton
    virginia tech
    marquette

    please coaches, no cupcakes.

If I was a betting man, I would put my money on the cupcake. And it will probably be a pink one as well.

I don't think that it's the Shox that are looking for a cupcake

This was covered several weeks ago in shockwaves...

WSU needs one game to complete its schedule. Marshall will hold that slot as long as he can in hopes of leveraging it into a series against a quality opponent. For the right opponent, WSU would start on the road.

Marshall is holding out for a high-quality opponent in a home-and-home. That's what the fans want.

The odds are pretty long against that happening, wo we're likely to end up with a cupcake as the only option for the last game, which is what the fans don't want.

I don't envy anybody trying to put WSU's schedule together. WSU could probably get an RPI 100-150 home-and-home, but that's not the type of competition fans want to see. Holding out for what they want to see is usually going to result in no choice but an RPI250+ cupcake, which is the last thing fans want.

I would be thrilled with that. It's more likely to get done than what "the fans" want to see and sure as hell beats Alcorn State or whichever like team we're bound to end up with.

What are the odds that UMKC would be a better team than who we end up filling the last game with? My guess is we'll be saying that we should have kept UMKC when the last game is announced.

Assuming the 100-150 school are willing to play a home-and-home, I think the real dilemma is whether you go ahead and take the deal or try to hold out for a top 50 or top 100 school, with the risk that the 100-150 schools may fill their schedule in the meantime and if the top 100 schools don't agree to schedule you, you might be stuck with a bad RPI buyout as your only option.

I would happily take the 100-150 RPI team right now. Regardless of conference affiliation.

If a home-and-home with an RPI 100-150 team is acceptable to fans, then some e-mails to that affect might be in order.

WSU is likely to be a top-50 RPI team next year. A game against a 100-150 RPI team is a "nothing to win - everything to lose" game. It's another Bracket Buster type game where a loss might keep you out of the NCAA's. Just like BCS schools don't want to play WSU, Marshall may not want to schedule games more favorable to the opponent in post-season consideration.

Here's last year's 100 - 110 teams according to Pomeroy. Some of these teams look way more attractive than others.

                    100 Dayton A10 22-14
                    101 Indiana St. MVC 20-14
                    102 Central Florida CUSA 21-12
                    103 Bucknell Pat 25-9
                    104 Stanford P10 15-16
                    105 Arkansas SEC 18-13
                    106 Northern Iowa MVC 20-14
                    107 Valparaiso Horz 23-12
                    108 East Tennessee St. ASun
                    109 James Madison CAA 21-12
                    110 Portland WCC 20-12

                      This.

I'd take a for-sure 100-150 team over a 5% of chance of landing a Top 50 team and then dealing with the subsequent consequences.

Winning a game against a 300ish RPI team would likely drop our final RPI 7~10 spots.

Losing a game against a 125ish RPI team would likely drop our final RPI about 7~10 spots.

Beating a 125ish RPI team helps the final RPI by several spots.

I'll take the option with the upside.

Whats wrong with a home and home series with ORU?

They will almost always be 150 or better in RPI, they are close drive as well.
