There should be a couple of them on the Shocker bench. The assistants are not bringing the game day product, plain and simple. Gregg can’t be expected to do it himself.

I think Gregg wants to do it himself so he brought in a couple recruiters. The problem is that he is simply not capable of doing it himself.

Look no further than Andy Reid. No matter how good of a coach you are, you cannot do it by yourself.

Even so. Andy makes poor absent minded game decisions that make no sense.

New Mexico state is 17th in defensive efficiency right now, impressive no matter what your conference affiliation is, we’re somewhere in the 40’s. That should tell you all you need to know honestly, we have a coaching staff full of recruiters i can see some changes being made this off season.

Down to #19 in kenpom, which is as low as we’ve been in a very, very long time. Maybe ‘11 or ‘12.

Now 65th in defense efficiency. Wow!

It's a miracle that the Shockers are even ranked after losing to a team(Houston) that they blew out previously by 30+ points. How is it that we were fine with all the starters on defense last year, yet that same group cannot defend against Agnes Gru this year ?

The loss isn’t even in yet. Watch out for the free fall.

With this question im about to ask all of you, by no means am I proclaiming anything im just looking for others perspective, but do any of you feel as if the hiring of Donnie Jones was the correct hire needed in order to fill a necessary empty void, or is it still too early to tell? It seems like scouting and in game adjustments have taken a hit, the jury is still out in terms of recruiting.

            You sure?

Pretty confident we dropped to #15 after SMU, so there’s been movement since.

Donnie Jones has us in the running for a couple lunkers which should help cover up some of Gregg’s flaws if he were to land a couple. As for another assistant, I wouldn’t expect a prep school guy to be amazing at adjustments and the Xs and Os but I don’t know enough to comment on him.

Yea, we’re 15-3. There’s usually some sort of movement any time one of our former opponents plays a game.

kenpom hasn’t posted the loss yet to WSU. So any changed is actually due to WSU opponents actually dropping themselves.

                  charlotte has been dropping
                  California dropping
osu win has had decreasing value
                  Ark st has been dropping
                  ucon has been dropping

Prep school guy is the strangest AC hire at WSU in the HCGM era, and it’s not close.

There are guys I went to HS with that could be argued to have commensurate resumes at this point in their lives, and they’re all guys with day jobs.

But to what end? Have a recuiter on staff that can’t make in game adjustments?

The ability to send players to CSA is a huge asset, it helps them get more aquatinted with our offensive and defensive schemes early on.

Is it worth giving up recruiting hot spots or game day adjustments?

As I was driving back from the game today I was wondering what the central issue with our team. There are a lot of personnel issues such as certain guys not being good enough to play at this level and our good players not being as good as we think they are, but really, we’re being out coached. The scout is out. 3G is coaching in a major conference for the first time in his life and team/coaches are better at adjusting to us than they were in the Valley. 3G is really good at playing teams that aren’t familiar with us, but he has a very predictable offense and defense. We can no longer our muscle or out-athlete conference foes. I’m afraid we’re gonna see 5-6 losses in conference. Cincy, Memphis, SMU and Temple can all beat us. We’re gonna have to grin and bear it until we can get an influx of ballers on this team and then maybe even wait a year or two. The recruiting is up but the coaching is way down.

Not so sure about that. While there have been a few games when I thought 3G got out-coached, it's been rare, but it happens sometimes. It can also be said that 3G has out coached guys like Mark Few, Jamie Dixon, Thad Matta, Bill Self and Sean Miller, just to name a few. You may assert that 3G beat those coaches because they were not familiar with 3G's game plan, which would seem to indicate those highly regarded coaches do not know how to scout opponents. Highly doubtful. Besides, the AAC is not familiar with 3G, and he's 5 and 2 against them. I also do not believe 3G's game plan is anymore predictable than that of any other coach. I truly believe the losses this season can be attributed to one thing; the loss of 3G's top two assistants, Chris Jans and Greg Heiar. Not having those two guys at every practice working with the players, and not having them on the bench during games to help make adjustments, is huge. I guess you could say 3G failed as a head coach by not finding worthy replacements for Jans and Heiar, but that may be more just a matter of time.

A few more games like the Houston one, and 3G's phone will be ringing off the hook come April.

He’s a good recruiter but known as a terrible x,s &o,s guy. I never liked the hire. People jumped all over me last summer/fall when I expressed that.

Agree with Topshock. Did not like the Donnie Jones hire.

Regarding the assistant coaches and the previous 10 years:

Jans was an assistant or advisor 9 of those 10 years. Heiar was here the 1 year Jans was not.

Heiar had been here 6 years.

Forbes was here with Jans and Heiar 1 year and with Heiar the other (the only year Jans was not here in some capacity) a S16 year.
