Marshall's current contract has him making $800,000 annually through the 2014-15 season. By completing his fourth season, he also earned a $400,000 bonus — or an extra $100,000 above the three-year bonus he received. Another season nets him another $100,000 bonus.

This is great news for us and the school, and the players. We love our basketball here, and we love a great coach. Onward and upward ...

Is it a brand new contract or just an extension of the current contract?

It sounded like an extension with, likely, more money. Details still in negotiation.

Now that he's staying does any of this credit go to Sexton?

Probably some, but it is really hard to say how much for sure. We do not know for a fact that 3G actually turned down NC State. Could be NCSU advised 3G that he would not be their choice.

It's also possible that 3G is watching the South Carolina situation. Darrin Horn had a good 1st year going 21-10 (10-6 ACC) but he has followed that up with a 15-16 (6-10 ACC) and 14-16 (5-11 ACC) record for the past two years. Another year or two of sub-500 records and South Carolina may be on the prowl. That's probably 3G's dream job.

I suppose it's possible that Wichita State is his dream job, but that might be a stretch considering he is not too happy with his MVC brethren.

In any case, we have 3G for at least one more year and I'm happy he is staying.

Well during the coach's show Marshall mentioned both AD Sexton and President Beggs by name in speaking about factors that went into his decision to stay so I think you have to give him some credit.

I don't think what Sexton might have said to him or how much of a contract extention he might have gotten really made any difference. I think Marshall just likes it here.

He said this about the team, but I think it also refers to him, "You've got to bloom where you're planted."

Yes, and the fact that he was at Winthrop for 9 years proves he is not a job hopper and has some loyalty.

And as Aargh has pointed out there seems to be a special relationship between Garrett and not just 3G but the entire Marshall family.

He's not exactly scraping by financially as it is. Not sure what his new contract will bring but $1 million plus per year in Wichita, Kansas goes a long way. I think he will get by.

In another thread the name of John Kresse was brought up. I believe his influence as a mentor, and the fact that he set an example of being happy at CoC for many years, had to play a factor.

We do need to give Eric some props. This atheletic department is not on autopilot. He had to make some fiscal decisions and make it happen. I give credit to Dr. Beggs as well. He supports this program very publicly and enthusiastically.

In my mind, Sexton obviously is keeping Marshall happy. He deserves some credit for that.

And if GM left would it have been b/c GM didn't like it here? Of course not, to many of you.

Right or wrong, Sexton would have been blamed for Marshall leaving.

Of course he deserves credit for GM staying. He was offered $2 mm per year for goodness sakes!

Many have underestimated Sexton and no doubt will continue to do so.

Extend the contract to 2018, increase base salary to $850k. Any more than that should also come with a higher buyout clause.
