It is my understanding that his base is $750,000, but all total (appearances, other incentives, etc.) that it comes up to about $900,000. I would say raise his base to $900,000, throw in some new bennies for him, and with other incentives his total package would be about 1.1 mil for 7 years, subject to change if and when he makes the dance.

I am trying to be reasonable and not go overboard, but still reward him.

Not sure how it works with highly compensated employees, but with normal employees wouldn't you expect a 3% to 4% raise per year?

If so that would put his salary somewhere near (using 4%):

      Year 1: $750,000
      Year 2: $780,000
      Year 3: $811,200
      Year 4: $843,648

This is all prior to bonuses and endorsements.

Still not $1MM but closing in. There is certainly some panache to having a $1MM+/yr base salary. Let's get it done and put more pressure on our Valley brethren to elevate their game.

I'd say the key to the next contract with HCGM would be to sweeten both ends of the deal, for both parties. Possibly pay him slightly more than the going rate per year, but also make the buy out huge, so it gives both sides security in the situation.

Also, I know that in College Football, a lot of programs are moving towards incentive based packages, rather than increasing yearly salaries. Make it so he makes a pretty penny for getting in the tournament, and then another level of bonus for a sweet 16, another for a final four, and another for a full blown championship. If HCGM would agree to this, I think it would solidify his dedication to sticking with this program for a long time.

Based on that list, I believe Gregg is underpaid. My opinion only.
I don't. Based on that list, Coach Marshall makes more than Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, Steve Fisher, Stew Morrill, and Jim Larranaga. Seems to me like Marshall is right where he should be. $750,000 a year is a good salary for his level. The names on that list who make $1 million or more a year are mostly people who have brought their programs to multiple NCAA tournaments, Final Fours, and national championships. Marshall has been here four years and not made an NCAA tournament yet. The NIT run is great, this season has been historic, no one wants Marshall to bail out after this season. I would hope that the man is more committed to building the Shocker basketball program than bailing out for a couple thousand more in salary at another program. Once again, $750,000 a year is a big time salary. That's way more than what he made at Winthrop.

The only reason that I can see him leaving is if he thinks he can get to more NCAA tournaments at a power six conference program, because he can recruit better players at a more high-profile program. That's something that money can't change for WSU. No matter how much you pay Marshall, that's not going to change his ability to recruit at WSU. Players don't come to a program because the coach has a large salary. I don't see him leaving just for money. Making it to the NIT finals maybe is more likely to keep Marshall at WSU because now he can use that in recruiting and get better players to consider coming to WSU. I would think that's what he wants: better players so that he can compete on a higher level. Not necessarily more money.

GM told me last year that he just got a new mortgage and he'd be living here long after the mortgage was paid.

            Let's win the NIT tonight!!

Unfortunately, he can probably payoff his mortgage in 2 ot 3 years if he wanted to.

Nevertheless, I think your points about the Prez and ADES working on an extension is a good one.

And as far as you last sentiment I say. Hell Yes, End With a Win!

We can help the recruiting situation. Give him a contract that makes it doubtful that he will leave. Brad Stevens still gets some mention after last years extention, but few think he will leave Butler. Recruits will have less concern about a coaching change. 2nd, get us in to a Major League, being discussed in another thread.

Mark Few makes just a hair under a million. Marshall is not on that level yet. That said, a pay increase and extension need to happen.

I'd give coach a $1,000,000 contract, for six or seven years.

Marshall started at 750,000. I think he's at 950,000 but that could be with incentives, TV, radio, ect.

I agree, we need to feather his nest a little more, and show him how much we appreciate him (and his family and coaching staff).

It'd be nice to bump him right up to the 7 figure level, just because, but we need to save some room to expand should he really make some marks in the NCAA tourney. I think we have room to grow from where we are now, but if we (were able to) go to $1.2M, $1.3M, or something, I think we would hit our ceiling pretty quick should we need to re-up again.

I wont't begrudge him if he goes home (unlike KU fans) but we need to make it the most difficult decision of his life. By the way, Kennedy said in the pre-game how much Gregg liked Wichita and the passion we had for basketball.
