  • It should be obvious there are current serious rumors. I'll throw this out also. Marshall was thought to be the fall back for Missouri. Two others are now thought to be the falll back.

      Yeah. exactly.

      • Love this DoFo quoted on NC St board!
At least one person on the ShockerNet forums thinks we offered Marshall $1.6mil/year today. Don't know if this is true or not. Figured I'd add it to the list of "source" information.

Shaka Smart’s VCU basketball athletic director, Norwood Teague, has been contacted by the Missouri Tigers, according to Sports By Brooks. This is the first report of Mizzou formally expressing interest in Smart after his Final Four loss. If the report is accurate, it doesn’t mean Smart will talk with Mizzou or that he’s even interested in leaving VCU (for a massive raise), but it would be a first step.

You’d think both Missouri and the N.C. State Wolfpack would do just about anything to turn their programs over to Smart after the job he did with VCU this season. A bidding war between the two schools wouldn’t be hard to imagine. And, of course, he could always return to the Rams.

It’ll be exciting to see what happens over the next couple weeks regarding Smart’s future.

          • Some rumors floating around twitter right now about Billy Donovan also. Saying Donovan told UF that he had an offer from NCState and UF is trying to counter.

I seriously doubt this one, especially since it's not coming from sources I know or trust. Just figured I would throw that out there.

            • I like the Donovan to NC St, then Frank Martin to Florida rumor. That's my favorite.

              • I like Smart and if he goes to NC State I wish nothing but the best for him.

However, the fact of the matter is that he isn't proven. He has someone else's players and they had a hell of a run. Their win over KU is stuff of legend and Smart should be commended for his work.

If he lands at these schools for that kind of money, more power to him. The schools however are taking a huge gamble.

                  +1

I think Smart is a great guy and seems to be a good coach, but if they are worried about GM not being proven, I am not sure what they see in SS.

They make it sound like if NC State doesn't get there "A" list possibilities, then Smart would be the next choice, then Marshall if Smart doesn't go. Lots of great information.

                      • And if I was third or fourth choice (regardless of the money), I would tell them where to put the offer (nicely of course). I always thought South Carolina was his destination job and that may be opening up in the next year or two. Why not wait until he gets what he wants.

Was Keno Davis' decision to go from Drake to being fired at Providence good for his family?

How about Jeff Lebo's decision to go from Chattanooga to being fired at Auburn. Was that good for his family?

Maybe Bobby Gonzolez going from being successful and happy at Manhattan College to being fired at Seton Hall good for his family.

Now I have just listed a few off the top of my head that didn't go so well. I know there are some who did make the right choice.

The point is it's a crapp shoot. It seems being a major college basketball coach has some narcissistic tendancies to it. How do you know if it greener on the other side? Go to the other side I guess. But it can come at a steep price.

I hope GM stays. I think he is a good coach. Fans just can't trust what comes out of coaches mouths. Fans have been burnt too many times. By mid-week we will know if GM is loyal to WSU...at least for another year.
Geeze -- come down off your soap box and take a breath. You seem to think coaching is all about loyalty to a school. That's crap and you should know it. It's a business. It's a job. It's a career. If you think you can advance yourself in your career while securing your family's financial security, then why not? Do I want him to go -- hell, no. But I would understand if he chooses to do so. And I think it will be a very difficult decision for him if he does decide to leave.
I don't even use soap. ;-) So keep your soap box reference. That's the problem with some in our society. We don't expect loyalty...WE SHOULD.

Don't give me that garbage about securing your family. It's a little different than you and I having a $50,000 job looking to make $75,000. That is a family financial security move. GM already making 1M in Wichita, Kansas looking to make 1.5-2M some where else is certainly, from a math standpoint, significant, but don't give me this family security BS. You have the wrong financial planner if you can't scrape by on 1M.

                              • SHOMVC clearly not a finance guy. Present value of 2 mil over five versus 1 mil over ten is much higher given almost any risk scenario. Particularly if there's a buyout clause, which there would be. It's not a guarantee that he is safe forever at WSU. String together a few disappointing season and voila..gone. When your well-being is largely dependent on the actions of 18-22 year old boys it's better to get paid today than tomorrow.
