We have proven we can play with the big-boys; if we want a coach to stay, we need to ante up accordingly, or face this same issue continuously. :wsu_posters:

GGG makes quite a bit more than most coaches in the country. Coaches from outside the six power conferences earned an average salary of about $400,000. GGG makes 500k more than that. Also, power conference coaches average about $1.2 million a season. I say we're pretty dang close to the average.
We don't want to be average.
HC3G makes more than Fisher at Butler and is within a couple of grand of Mark Few at Gonzaga. He is the highest paid coach in the Valley. Nothing about that is average. Remember that the "average" for a BCS school is greatly skewed by the top 10 coaches making between 2.5 and 7 Million a year. The next 10 or so make about 1.5. 2/3rds make less than Marshall. I'm not saying we shouldn't pay him, but we will top out at like 1.5 mil or so. What are we going to do if he goes to the Elite 8? offer him more years I suppose, but nothing says maxed out your potential here like declining a raise after another improved performance.

As for "an unbelievable offer," I would say Marshall is a smart man. There might be one of those at Nc State or the like just waiting for him. He is probably negotiating in the media with that comment, both with WSU and NC St. He's like, "Yeah I'm interested in going home, but I've got a great thing here in Wichita. I'm not just going to take over your wreck of a program because you're in the ACC."

    • At tonight's celebration, 3G was recording video on his phone (nice for recruiting purposes). 3G and Graham soaked it up and they were the last two to leave the floor.

            • I'm glad that we have so much experience in running multimillion dollar bureaucracies on this board. So much executive talent with an eye for picking new leaders that meet success in their divisions while still maintaining compliance under a raft of regulatory scrutiny.

I'm equally glad we don't have a bunch of half-wits that couldn't shift supervise a Spangles.

                  • Missouri State hires Purdue assistant

Missouri couldn’t get a coach from Purdue, but Missouri State did. Paul Lusk, the Boilermakers’ associate head coach, has been chosen as the Bears’ 17th men’s basketball coach.

Lusk will be introduced at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. today.

Lusk, 40, spent the last seven seasons as a Purdue assistant.

He replaces Cuonzo Martin, who accepted the Tennessee job last week.

                          • Gregg Marshall: "We like this community and we've got a great team coming back next year so it would take an unbelievable offer to get me to leave. I just don't know if that will come along. The bottom line is this is where we are, this is where our heart is, this is where our family is, our school, our church. Everything's here."

His heart may be here, but his head may not -- and I am not judging him at all. He has done wonders with this program considering what he had when he came. If he was not interested in moving on, he would have said just that. If he does stay, I would hope it would be for at least a couple of years more.

However, if what Doc said is true about Marshall not liking the style of ball that is being played in the Valley and the other coaches are not wanting to change that style, then I see that as a very large problem. Unless the Valley changes (and I am not referring only to the style of ball played), I don't see Marshall here long term.

I sometimes have blinders on so I dont' know what Doc meant when he said that Marshall did not like the way WSU is treated in the Valley. Anyone wanting to expand on this?

                            • What would GM (or any coach) want in a coaching job:

                              1. Job Security
                              2. Fan Support
                              3. Support from Admin
                              5. Good facilites
                              6. One of the top programs in conference
                              7. Opportunity for post season success
                              8. Good community, school, etc.
                              9. $$$$
                              10. Big man on campus and in community

He has all of these at WSU. An unbelievable offer would have to include most of these items, and if not all, the $$$ would have to be unbelievable.

NC State does not provide at least 1, 2, 6, and 10. It may not provide 5 or 8. NC State will always be second fiddle to Duke and UNC and most likely NC State football. Success would be hard, and sustained success would be even harder. And even with success, the coach would still be behind Coach K and Roy.

Missouri provides a lot of the items, but football and KU reign supreme.

At the end of the day, WSU gives GM everthing. Until a job gives him these items and more money, GM will remain WSU's coach.

Teams aren't made to account for their garbage schedules.

We do what is best for us and the league, few others try to match that attitude.

I am serious when I say part of any contract reup by our AD needs to include a wholehearted attempt to find another existing league or join forces with others to create a new one (see multiple threads).
