I agree with the earlier sentiment that if Marshall is going to leave soon (which is likely) we are probably better off if he leaves now. I hate to see him go. It's like being jilted. But really, it would be easier to transition now than after next year's senior class leaves.
Just please, please ADES, don't freaking bring Danny Manning in here though. I don't think I can take that!
Gregg Marshall's success at the mid-major level created a lot of speculation that he could be a contender for the coaching position at North Carolina State University, which was vacated with the departure of Herb Sendek. Sidney Lowe, a former Wolfpack player and former head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies, was eventually named the head coach of the Wolfpack.
I have a friend in Richmond who says that VCU is on the verge of putting together a 10 year, $1.5 million contract extension for Shaka. He seemed pretty sure that Smart would take this if the offer comes to fruition.
Of course, rumors from even the biggest boosters are notoriously unreliable.
I am fairly sure you are right. I took it the exactly same way.
As did I. I don't think Mike nornally would put a Coach on the spot like that, but I think he just got caught up in the excitement of the moment. It was definitely an ackward moment and certainly didn't do anything to soothe the concerns about 3G leaving.
If the next several years were going to be a repeat of the past, which would you prefer, the results of Marshall, or the results of Turgeon? I'll take a conference championship (in a strong Valley) and a Sweet 16!
I agree with that. The question is who is best suited to lead us to those results. In my mind that would be 3G. If 3G does leave, then getting those desired results becomes much more of an iffy proposition.
How is this a fair question to compare MT and 3G? MT was here 7 years, his 6th being the S16 and his 7th year his 3rd worst year. 3G just finished his 4th year with arguably better years in this 3rd and 4th than MT's 4th and 5th. Yes, MT did bring us out of the abyss, but both he and Marshall took over fairly similar teams personel wise. True, MT did not have the advantage of an updated arena and recent Shocker success in the past.
Some would also argue that Miller, who seemed to be very key to our S16 year, might not have even come here had it not been for his desire to pitch for the Shocker baseball team.
Agreed, MT played against tougher Valley competition, but did he ever, in his first 4/5 years win 5 games in a year against the quality of teams Marshall's team just did.....in a row even.
All this being said, I'd like to think 3G has unfinished business that he'd like to take care of at WSU before moving on, (if he does). The Horizon and the WCC didn't hold back Butler and Gonzaga, why should the Valley hold back Marshall and the Shocks?
Butler has benefitted mightily from the post Knight Indiana implosion.
Gonzaga is the only game in town in a Metro significantly bigger than Wichita and gets a religious following Creighton could only dream of.
Not saying WSU can't reach that level. Just pointing out the advantages.
According to Wikipedia there is no significant difference in population between Spokane and Wichita. In 2010 Spokane city had a poplulation of 208,000, their Washington State Metro area 477,000 and if you include Western Idaho you can get the Metro area up to 609,000.
Wikipedia shows Wichita city over 380,000 in 2010 with a metro area over 623,000.
While Gonzaga might gain a little from the religious affiliation, WSU does have some advantages being a public university (versus a smaller private school).
One other advantage WSU has is a much bigger arena than Gonzaga (almost40% larger).

Not to parse geography, but that Wichita metro number casts a wide net that includes places much farther afield and more likely to be Cat Backers. A Hawk fan in Wichita can get in his car and be in Larryland in 2.5 hours. Spokane to Seattle in 5. You're not taking a there and back roadie to a UW basketball game.
One more down! Now it's Mizzu and NC St. Hopefully they will decide soon because if HCGM is going to leave, we will now have to compete with UNLV for our vacancy.
