Unless that contract extension includes a prohibitive buyout clause, which is highly unlikely, then not sure that is worth a whole lot, but at least it shows ADES is being somewhat proactive. And maybe if it includes a big raise more than somewhat proactive.

I just want to make sure I understand. You are questioning a man's character based on vibes and feelings?

I don't want to assume that you meant want you typed, literally, but I would be foolish to assume otherwise.

A contract extension right now usually means "stay away, not interested." Although I'm not sure how reliable an unknown source from the chat is.

It makes no sense for him to take the OU job. In my honest opinion, Coach is sick of the "rebuilding" phase, and wants to win, and go to the tournament. No matter what school is being talked about, WSU is his best shot at going to the tournament, the soonest. He has the team he wants, and the players he wants, coming in next year. He is used to going to the tournament, every single year. His work to get WSU back up to tournament level took longer than he hoped, and he's not about to leave the program he's built back up from when Turg left the cupboard bare. He doesn't want to do that all over again, unless it would be NCST and then I think we should all genuinely worry.
Silly rabbitt Trix are for kids... (not saying HCGM's leaving but his work was less than MT's and yet look where he (MT) is today)
Yes, but the main reason Mark left was on the advice of his mentor Larry Brown (a man who has job-hopped his entire career), whereas Gregg's mentors are Kresse (who spent 23 years at Charleston) and Cremins (who spent 19 years at Georgia Tech).

I remain unconvinced that Mark would have left were it not for Brown, and the coaches that Gregg respects will not push the mentality that you have to move on to a bigger school the way Brown did to Mark.
Plus Turg had this perception that coaching at WSU was a hindrance to recruit nationally, and for the best players. I think Gregg does not have this perception, and feels that WSU has the atmosphere of a major university program, for example his quote about looking at our budget, how we travel, etc etc.

Comparing Turg's situation to Gregg's is pretty hard to do, as I think Gregg's character as a man is much higher than Turg's. Also thats a very good point to make about who their mentor's were. It shows that Gregg is from the school of thought that you stick with a program that loves you, and aside from some of the posters who here who complain about his X and O ability, I think the majority of the fan base can't find much negativity to say or point out about Gregg.

I would love to have him be our coach for 20, 25, 30 more years. I think having longevity at the coaching position only strengthens a university's ability to achieve a high level of playing.
I disagree. Mark's philosophy and perception about mid-majors and WSU has nothing to do with his character as a man. He just has a different opinion. Both coaches run pretty clean programs where getting a decent education is highly valued--perhaps at WSU a little more than at A&M but that's debatable. I'd just say they are different and just leave it at that.

I do agree that Gregg doesn't feel as hindered in recruiting here as Mark seemed to.

Gregg leaving is inevitable. Not necessarily this year, but it's going to happen. I'd like to think he would wait one more year until Garrett, Toure and David are all seniors along with Joe, but who knows....
I don't know, I always got the vibe from Turg that he was a jerk to everyone, where Gregg seems to just be a jerk to opponents. I ALWAYS felt that this was just a place holder in Turg's career. I don't feel that way with Gregg. I really think that if the University shows committment to his salary, and he can get over the NCAA hump and actually get into the tournament here, that he will stick around. I think the only 2 reasons he would leave here, would be either for his dream job, but only if that comes up before he consistently get into the tournament with WSU. I think the other situation would be part 2 of the dream job thing, that if he feels that its too hard to get into the tournament year in and year out with the Valley, that if he had WSU in any other conference he could get them in the tournament as an at large. I really don't think he leaves in the next couple years, I just don't see it.

But then again some people didn't see Turg leaving exactly when he did.
I respectfully disagree M.T. was not a jerk in fact he and his wife were always engaging of both myself and my ex-wife at WSU and non-social events. Is this how a jerk acts? I do not believe so.

Comparing either of these two men is apples to oranges. I am grateful for what both men have done for my beloved alma mater although I believe HCGM has more to do before he moves. If HCGM can make a run or three into Dance I will not only wish him well but all the best unless he's playing a Valley team or our Shocks. I feel the same way for Coach Turgeon, he did more for our program than a lot of the younger folks give him credit for. M.T. and his staff delivered WSU from "the abyss".

He was always genuine with everyone I know and was very friendly to the students, fans and fraternities on campus.

I consider both him and HC3G to be class acts and have never heard anything to the contrary by anybody. I'm sure he rubbed someone the wrong way somewhere -- but who hasn't?

We are lucky to have had HCMT and are equally lucky to have HC3G.

Agreed. I don't see any reason to say that Gregg is a better man than Mark, but he certainly seems to be a better fit.

I am pretty sure that Coach Turgeon was not characterized as a jerk by many people, if any.

While I had only a couple of brief conversations with him, he always seemed genuine and friendly. I might add, Coach Turgeon initiated the conversations, which took place before summer ball games at Koch Arena.

Sometimes after losses, he was a little cranky on the post game show with Kennedy. It did not bother me at all. It takes awhile for competitive coaches and players to get over a loss. Fiery competitors hate to lose.

                    • FWIW, would Turgeon have ever referred to beating a BCS team as "getting a scalp"?

                      If not, why?
