I'm sure Marshall learned more from this season than he bargained for, but the reason why successful people are successful is because they have failed so much. Marshall is not a quitter, and neither should we be.
I would have expected Marshall to have learned in his previous 9 seasons with Winthrop, and previous years. He was a seasoned coach when he came here, and I expect him to be able to cure most teams problems during the season. A seasoned coach should not be making 'rookie' mistakes with his team, and I am not saying that Marshall did.
I'm not sure how he was expected to learn much at Winthrop when he won there all the time. With no mistakes from which to gauge, you don't learn a whole lot.

If Marshall were as seasoned as you would have us believe the 9 seasons and several consecutive league titles at Winthrop would make him, the bluebloods of the country would have been offering him $3million/year to come coach for them. Sad fact is, it's not as scientific as that.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

WSU hasn't been this deep since I can remember back to the early 90s. I promise you that Winthrop was never this deep during Marshall's tenure.

So you think that automatically means WSU is going the distance, because a coach automatically has a depth advantage?

Not so fast -- I believe he still has to learn how to use the depth. What works, what doesn't?

Example 1: It was apparent he was trying wholesale substitutions in order to wear the other teams down. On some nights that had the unintended consequence of making players that were hitting their shots go cold. Who would have figured?

Example 2: It was also apparent that he was trying to teach the guys to push the pace in order to wear other teams down. That didn't work out so well early in the season because our PGs weren't experienced enough to make it happen. Compound that with some frigid 3-point shots going off super early in the shot clock -- and it just wasn't working. He made the adjustment and backed off that and we never saw a real transition game evolve. However, once Ragland finally settled in a bit, we saw flashes of more transition style offense -- but that was a learning curve for everybody -- not just Ragland.

Example 3: You would assume that because you go 9+ deep there will be enough people with a hot hand to pull through any game. Really? Against SIU we had only Toure hitting shots. Against Indiana State in the last game only JT could make a shot. We simply had no fire power.

So the three obvious advantages of being deep didn't seem to pan out for us in the big games.

Who would have thought that? Clearly not most of the people on this board because they are the ones touting depth, depth, depth over and over -- but the depth wasn't always working out for us and at times worked against us.

That's not intuitive and you only get to learn that by trying, in my opinion.

        Another solid point.

I really hate to keep extending this thread, but think for a moment about how many different ways you could use the depth we had this year, while addressing some of the following:

        1)Being fresher than your opponent
        2)Developing for future years
        3)Keeping the seniors happy
        4)Keeping the talented underclassmen happy
        5)Building chemistry

I think you can come up with several different and unique ideas to address each of those issues, all of which are important. Sometimes, it's not as easy as it seems.

Those are two different situations. With 2 seconds left, and needing to go the length of the court, you guard the inbounds pass. Ask Rick Patino on that topic ala Christian Laetner Duke vs Kentucky.

When there is 5 seconds left in the game, you can dribble the length of the court and get a layup. Cameron Dollar did it when UCLA beat MU in the ncaa tourney. They went on to win the championship after that game.

I don't think we neccessarily should have double teamed the VCU guard, but a full court press to slow them down would have made them shoot from well beyond the 3 point line instead of a 4 foot jumper.
Marge: The plant called and said that if you don't come in tomorrow, don't bother coming in Monday.
          Homer: WOOHOO! Four day weekend.

The reason I felt that coach Marshall did not press was due to his teams fouling habits. Which turned out to be the problem anyway.

That was actually Tyus Edney. And you need a good/great guard to be able to pull that off. I agree on your other points.

Wait until Eagle tells you he held the ladder for Naismith when he nailed his first basket on a pole. :D

                      • When I used to play on Naismith's teams, we had to climb the dang ladder to get the ball every time we made a basket. Well, I had this buddy - a really tall minority student. I brought him down to the games and we just had him jump and grab the ball out of the basket so we didn't have to climb the ladder.

Then somebody said, "Wait a minute! If he can jump up and get the ball out of the basket, I bet he could jump up there and put the ball in the basket."

He knocked the bottom out of the basket the first time he dunked the ball.

Now nobody remember the kid who changed basketball forever.

Haha In no way shape or form am I claiming to be a "long-time" fan. I remember the bad times when a 24-8 record was a pipe dream. I just think its funny when these people who came on the bandwagon during the successful MT years start running around like chickens with their heads cut off when a team doesn't live up to its potential. Crap, look at the Heat. --it happens. Deal with it. Life goes on.

                          • Basketball wasn't that great back then either. It was white man vs native americans. The white man wanted to shoot baskets and the native american threw tomahawks into the backboard.

Which post(s) really got you fired up? I get a chuckle when posters like you bring up generalities about the fanbase here on SN.

Fanboards are generally created for fans to cheer, jeer, praise, complain, etc...Yes there are member of this forum that constantly come across as if somebody pi$$ed in their post toasties.

I am just as big a fan as anybody on here...I don't claim to be more.

I give Marshall and the team, what I consider, constructive critisism as well as praise on occasion.

No, this team did not live up to potential. It did happen.

I have dealt with it by loving my wife, kids and friends as I have always done. My oldest daughter just informed me I'm going to be a grandfather (YEA!!!). I have gone to work every day this week, as usual. I think I'm dealing with it great. My life seemingly is "going on,"

Now, why don't you deal with the fact that this is how fanboards work. Hey...gotta go. My grandfather nickname is apparently on the table for discussion downstairs. Life is going very well for me and all my other SN brothern, I suspect.

Grandchildren are the greatest thing (well then second greatest thing) ever created. You can spoil them rotten with toys, candy, etc., and when the crying starts or it's time to change a diaper, it's suddenly time for grandpa and grandma to go home and leave the problems to mom and dad. The old payback from when your child was a teenager and drove you crazy. Plus, just like the family dog, you can do no wrong, The grand kids will love you unconditionally.
