  • I do not want another coach......

    I want Triple G.

Griping aside about some coaching decisions in close losses, our team is athletic, plays hard, and usually pretty damn fun to watch. We have good kids that seem to, for the most part, conduct themselves in a way that is favorable in the community. Yes, we have not reached the dance under him yet, and while our window grows smaller next year, I feel our talent will still be superior to the rest of the league 1-10 and we will eventually win that stupid tournament.

That being said, how much does he want to be our coach? The Valley is a one bid and appears to be so for at least the next year and maybe two, based on returning talent. To think of a 2006 Bradley team that finished fifth with the likes of Sommerville, Bennett, Wright, O'Brien and Ruffin and compare them to the talent of the teams in the league now is mind boggling. Do you think the Valley of 2006 is what he bargained on when he made the move from the state he grew to love and call his own?
Coaches want to win NCAA championships and they want the best opportunity to do so, which means being one of the top 11 in the Big East or top seven in the SEC under the garbage system we have now. Triple G is no different. The money is better here obviously than Winthrop, but where really is his easier road to dance?

So, if by some miracle, we leave the Valley for greener pastures this off season or the NCAA expands to 96 teams, I would not be surprised if he stayed. Otherwise, I would not be surprised if he is shopping.

I'm not sure what he's done? He got dealt a bad hand when Turgeon's recruits who looked to be pretty good (Evann Baker and Bowles) split and one unfortunately passed away (Guy). Our best player this year is Durley, a Turgeon recruit. He was left with the best resources in the Valley to rebuild. Do you think he's better than Cuonzo Martin? How about Marty Simmons? Imagine if Marty Simmons had a private jet, nice facilities and something other than the meth capital of Kentuckiana to recruit to. I wonder how he'd do? We are fighting for first place this year in the worst Valley lineup I've seen in some time.

If the Valley is a one-bid league this year and we aren't the automatic, the Valley is not the problem, WSU is. We had chances against UConn, SDSU and VCU to improve our at-large resume. We lost at home to a decimated SIU squad. Split those four games and we're talking about seeding, not last four in. If Gregg wants to try his hand at the rising tide lifting his 7th-9th place ACC/SEC/Big East squad then so be it. The coaches that got to those leagues didn't get there overnight. They know how to coach too.

Look, we can do a lot worse than Marshall. I expect he'll learn lessons from this season. I expect he'll get better. I remember the Cohen, Thompson, Smithson run and I know a decent coach isn't a given. In my mind there is no doubt Gregg's underachieved this year. Many of us are receiving performance reviews this time of year. If I graded Marshall, I'd give him a "4-Needs Improvement."

Coaching, like any profession experiences the "Peter Principle." The idea that Gregg would do better at a higher level defies logic. If his resume is getting passed around, I doubt it's sitting on many AD's desks long. Maybe he can pull a Jim Les and bring in a specialist coach that knows how to defend ball screens, or knows how to communicate with kids.

Good points all, Baller. Of course taking care of our missed opportunities in reality means we have to go 27-3 to be in serious contention for an at large bid because of the league we play in. Is that what our coach wants to be faced with year in and year out? That is the question.

Win over UCONN or SDSU and don't shank ourselves in the liver on our home court and I don't think we have to go 27-3. A loss at MoSt, or Creighton or Evansville doesn't doom the team if they take advantage of one upset opportunity. Any time this team has had a chance to make a statement they do. They make a statement that they can't win it when the chips are down. The only big win I remember is Texas Tech, who got exposed throughout that year much like our 2007 year I recall. Again, I'm not saying Gregg sucks. I'm saying he's got to figure out how to get more out of himself, his coaches and his players. He knew how to do it at Winthrop.

You remember the one year when Coach K took all the Dukies niceities away when they were playing soft? Maybe the AD ought to take Marshall's away. Get on a bus, drive to KC and fly Southwest to go recruiting. If the team is soft, it's HIS team. Teams are a reflection of their coach.

All he has to do is win the games he should win, and this is a non-discussion. Seriously!!

I'll stick with Marshall. I like the way we are trending.

I guess my real point of this thread is what's easier year in and year out:

To win 25+ in a normal one bid league just to have a chance at an at large or

To win 17-18 in a BCS conference where every night you will be playing top 100 rpi teams to pad your resume?

Many coaches would opt for the latter and I would not be surprised if our coach is leaning that way. I remember Turg, in the year Ben Jacobson the player ripped our hearts out, talking about how much pressure was on each and every game "at this level" compared to a BCS conference with little or no room for error.

Now if you say that Triple G hasn't done anything to deserve that chance, that is a whole other discussion.

Shanking ourselves in the liver? Some reason you picked that organ?
                ;-)

Perhaps I missed something....has anyone even come close to saying or wanting Gregg to go?

                  I don't think so.

Gregg is nowhere near perfect....but I think he is perfect for WSU.

And I love the way things are handled off the court and in the classroom.

Doc, some posters translate any criticism of our coaching staff into the critics wanting them fired....so I thought, at least as I was concerned, I would set the record straight.
