Well, this explains it...he lost his Driver's license and it made getting on the plane more difficult because of security.

    • I have to agree with Shox21. I have noticed the same thing and if I were an opposing fan, would probably have the same perception of Ragland, especially after the UNI game. 95% of us do the same exact thing when watching opposing players. The other 5% are lying.

Fortunately, we know our players better, getting to see them in more than just one or two games (like opposing fans). We have a good group of young men.

      • It doesn't matter much to me what our opponents fans think of our players. I've really disliked some players from other schools - Nate Funk had the "charging bull" drive to the basket that was ALWAYS a foul on the defender. I really disliked Ben Jacobsen (the player), Jamaal Tatum was nothing but a thug.

        Etc, etc, etc.

WSU players are going to be quick to be accused of about anything. I think it started with Smithson II, who seemed to coach a fouling style. Those teams fouled A LOT. Then there was Jamar Howard.

I think WSU is just now getting over some officiating prejudice from that era of Shocker basketball.

I'm gonna have to strongly disagree with this opinion!

If you are not intimately acquainted with him, you are going to assume he is a prima donna that thinks he never does anything wrong, ergo you cannot possibly call a foul on him. I like Joe, but I can see where other fan bases could perceive him as a P'Allen type. Not flattering to be compared to.
I understand what you're saying about perception. But if the UNI fans had looked closer and more objectively, they would notice it's not what it seems at first glance.

Joe, after screwing up his face in a "did they really just call that?!" look, will often look back at our coach knowing he screwed up. everytime. Looks at the bench and then pats his chest, acknowledging that it was his bad. he does this when the team huddles before the opposing player shoots the free throws as well. he tells his teammates "my bad, dumb foul"

also, to help the perception, Joe talked with the ref for a while, never with an attitude. which is key. he explained his side and listened to the refs point of view and nodded his acknowledgement and a slap on the rear.

UNI fans at the game may not have noticed his pat on the chest acceptance of the foul, but it was evident on TV and, as a WSU fan, I see it all the time.

someone else mentioned that it's less of a complaint than just a constant effort to never let the team down. kinda like a perfectionist.
            first he feels disbelief.
            then guilt.
            then acceptance.

and you can watch this process through his body language.

            Hatch on the other hand....

Got some bad body language there.
It has gotten worse as the season wears on.

            the reason for that:

He feels like the refs are out to get him. he feels like he gets called for tacky fouls way more than any other player.

also, he carries the anger of other games bad calls with him to the next game. So when he gets one bad foul, in his mentality its the 10th bad foul. as they just continue to build.

Confusing independent variables as dependent ones.

While I do feel bad for him about some of the calls he gets, I wish he'd stop the antics!
I was not the one that compared Joe to P'Allen. I would hope we would NEVER have cause to compare any Shocker player to P'Punk. But I can't fault the UNI fans either. They don't see Joe on an every game basis the way we do. They will only see his first reaction (which is his "Who, me?" face) and very seldom will they continue to watch to see what else he might do. All I'm saying is if he doesn't want misconceptions with regard to his facial expressions after a foul, he shouldn't be making those faces in the first place. Come on now, he's not a 5 year old.
I know you weren't the one comparing him to P.
And I don't disagree with any of your statements really. :good:

By thug I assume you mean player that came off of screens leaving his skin on the screener's back, hit big shots, ran a plodding offense flawlessly, turned lazy passes into layups and knew exactly how much body and hand check he could get away with then yes, giant thug.

I would argue this WSU team doesn't have a PG that could bring the ball up consistently against Tatum's pressure.

                That's exactly what I meant.

I can remember players I disliked. It's harder to remember players for other teams that I liked. Those players never did anything memorable.

It's a good thing when other team's fans don't like your team's players.

                • UNI was all smirks when they upset WSU in Wichita.

They'll probably meet again in St Louis, and if Stutz can get involved, maybe WSU can turn that 18 pt win into a 30 pt win.

For all intents and purposes it was pretty much a 30 point win.

I don't know if we have set a record for victories in white-outs on the road but we may very well have set a record for most walk-on minutes in double-digit road victories.

                    • Makes perfectly good sense that it may have all started with Randy's "defensive style". It looks like Hatch and Stutz are picked on, for whatever reason. I imiagine that every team has a player or two like that.

                      • I think Graham's style has more to do with his fouls than anything Randy's team's did. Graham is scrappy, aggressive and doesn't shy away from contact. When you play like that and you are always in the middle of the physcial action you're going to get your share of fouls.

I think in Garrett's case he just gets out-quicked a lot.

Not saying there have not been bad calls, but they way these guys play also contributes to their foul situation.

I think where Garrett get's screwed is that he takes a lot of contact that doesn't get called. Not sure if that is because of his sized advantage he often has or that he tends to go up a little to weakly for a big man.

                        • I watched the replay last night and got a few chuckles listening to the announcers.

                          I’ll paraphrase…

“7 ft. center Garrett Stutz runs like a deer.”
