No surprise to me. Once he "went home" to mull the offer, it was pretty much a done deal.

That's unfortunate for him and WSU. Chances are he won't amount to anything in the minors, blow his money and not get a quality education.

      Big money I understand.

Eventually, they are going to have to remedy this system. It is slanted drastically against college programs.

Unfortunately, that day is a long, long ways off.

I agree with you whole-heartedly there. As long as the most a college can offer a kid is a partial scholarship just about any pro offer will look attractive to a young guy (especially an out-of-state kid).

Even if the colleges could offer a full ride the pros still probaly have the upper hand. As you said this probably isn't going to change anytime soon with Title IX and other cost pressures on athletic departments.

One of the tougher college sports to recruit succesfully in that's for sure. Can't be fun being used as a pawn for these young men to negotiate with.

That was pretty much my gut reaction also, but I was holding out hope that maybe the Dodgers would be too tight fisted with the money.

Doc - No surprise to me either. However, those "chances" you mention probably include most HS / one year juco players. It does appear to be unfortunate for us, but whether it's unfortunate for him is still to be determined and I hope his decision works out for him.

another blow to the shox baseball program. hope things work out for him and he makes it in a few years. screw professional sports, growing up I use to be a huge fan of mlb, couldn't get enough. i haven't watched 10 minutes of it this year and really couldn't care less. same with nfl, nba. as i grow older the more I'm a shox fan only, heck college sports will be ruined here in a few years once the big dogs finally squeeze off all the non bcs schools.

Yeah. To bad. At his draft position he is just cannon fodder for their real prospects. Unfortunately if wsu was a cws team team then they might have something to keep a player but they struggle being the best team in the mvc.

Schebler just hurt himself mostly. He comes here and has the stud year that we expect, he triples or quadruples his front money, has way more fun and another year or two of school under his belt. Now he'll just be bussing around one horse towns for a few years. Too bad. Good luck.

At least he got good money - $300,000 for a 26th round pick.

                        9th Round Jordan Cooper - $125,000

Yeah Cooper didn't negotiate very well. $40 K comes out for taxes. Seems like another year would have gotten him 4 or 5 rounds higher for a somewhat low downside.

That is understatement. It tells me how bad he wanted out of WSU.

I believe 40% is the tax rate for lump sum balances, plus social security, medicare, Medicaid and state taxes.

I don't think it shows Cooper wanted out. According to the info i have seen only 5 players drafted in the 5th thru 10th round didnt sign - which is amazing. I think it is a sign of the times. Kids want to get their pro career started.

$300,000 is unbelievable, and it is an amount that he would have been very hard pressed to improve upon at WSU. It's hard to question this decision...best of luck to Scott in the pros.
