The mighty "big boys"

All we ever hear from some people is about the "BCS" -- how they bully everyone else, how no one has a chance who isn't part of their club (which was apparently news to Butler's basketball team), etc., etc., etc. ad nauseam.

So it was interesting to see in ESPN's coverage of USC East (a/k/a South Carolina)'s championship in Omaha that this year's win by the big boys from the SEC, the most hulking of all the BCS conferences -- a school with enough resources to lure Steve Spurrier to coach football, and whose basketball team was once led by the renowned Frank McGuire -- was their first ever in a men's sport, and their first in 100 years of baseball.

Gee, it only took them 21 years to catch up with WSU.

Yeah, but Butler and George Mason didn't win the Championship. To be fair, anyone of us would love for the SEC to invite the baseball Shox to play in their conference. Second, SC baseball is not a fluke. They have 26 NCAA Tourney appearances and 9 CWS appearances, 3 runner-up CWS finishes and 1 championship title.

Also, ESPN did say that SC didn't join the SEC until 1991 so considering they are fairly young in terms of membership with the SEC, they have done really well in baseball (especially from 1999 on). Lastly, what a surprise, a BCS team won another major men's sports title.

A lot of BCS schools don't have a national title in any sport. KSU comes to mind.

In terms of facilities, support, tradition and attention by the administration we are in a lot of ways one of the 'big boys' in the sport - a fact often recognized more by objective outsiders than some of our own sometimes.

To be fair, it may be a tad more difficult to recruit against the billion other schools in their neck of the woods than here.

Also, they don't have the light load that is the Valley to deal with during their first 3 months out of the year. A little tougher on the psyche for them.

Exactly right, Ragman. As our occasional visitor Charlie from Arkansas has pointed out, when it comes to baseball, WSU is indeed one of the big boys. Some of our posters just don't seem to recognize it and would rather complain about the "BCS" and how we're doomed by comparison.

Exactly right, Ragman. As our occasional visitor Charlie from Arkansas has pointed out, when it comes to baseball, WSU is indeed one of the big boys. Some of our posters just don't seem to recognize it and would rather complain about the "BCS" and how we're doomed by comparison.

Not doomed, but at a definite disadvantage. Yes, we have all those things that Ragman mentioned, but those things alone don't necessarily get you automatically admitted to dance. When it comes to baseball, being mired in the Valley of Muck, even the Sun Belt teams have gained an advantage with "scoreboard" over us. Our margin of error is small in the non-con and almost nonexistent in conference.

It's better to be in a given top 25 than not to be in it -- but a few years ago, no one would have suggested that finishing in a secondary top 25 ranking was an accomplishment for WSU.
