I guess I didn't see anyone in this thread that it was directed to.

The Shox did what they needed to do after Saturday's disaster. It could have been very easy for them to have fallen off the edge being down 1-0 after 6 innings, but they hung tough and finished strong.

Much better than most everyone (if your honest about it) would have thought, given who and where we were playing. Going 2-3 wouldn't have been out of line given their past, 3-2 a good week, and 4-1 a very strong week. We all would have liked them to have gone 5-0, but that would have been even unlikely for many 80s and 90s Shocker teams.

My previous post was for our resident Nancy Boys and they know who they are. This is the 2nd outing Tim Kelly has started out a little shakey and stayed in and seemed to get stronger the longer he pitched. How many times in the past have we had an opposing pitcher on the ropes only to let him hang around and then really make us pay in later innings. Not advocating TK continue doing it this way but it works. I have to go outside now and pump a little sunshine.

Good bounceback win.

Still a little disheartening getting outscored 15-1 in the final 4 innings yesterday, but like others have said... with this team, I guess I can take 4-1. I wish we could have avoided the 1 with ISU though. We really needed a sweep.

We'll be playing catch up the rest of the way.

As I said recently, one of the nice things about baseball when you have a game like Saturday's is that it's only one loss. All you have to do is come back the next day and win, and in most cases life goes on.

I believe this is one of those cases: if the Shocks take care of business from here on out in Valley play -- i.e, 2 of 3 at Creighton and a sweep at home vs. MSU -- and finish 15-6 in the league, they stand a solid chance of overtaking IlSt, which has upcoming road weekends at Evansville and MoState that could easily tack on three more losses for the Redbirds. And the Valley tournament is probably the key anyway at this point, which is probably good news -- who has a better chance, especially if Lowell makes it back by then?

Regardless, it was yet another tough weekend for the tone-setters and momentum gang in a season full of them. First, Cooper sets a great tone Friday with a dominating shutdown performance, while the Shocks put up nine runs. How long does that tone last? Well, less than two innings on the mound, and three innings at the plate, as WSU scores seven in their first three at-bats while pitching a guy who has been rounding into form nicely -- and gets run-ruled. Run-ruled in the MVC? Now that's embarrassing.

And so how long does the shame and negative momentum last? Six innings on offense, arguably, but they play nine, and with the old Tim Kelley and a recovering Loren Hoch showing up, WSU's slow start is no problem. Nice display of momentum, huh? An impressive win followed by a truly frightful and embarrassing loss followed by an unspectacular but solid job of taking the series. Just one more illustration of why all that matters is today's game, and also of why going off the deep end over a bad performance any given day, as some of our less stable posters do, is just silly with a capital S.

Even going back to the days when there was no doubt who was going to win the conference tournament, Johnny Wholestaff has had to pitch a game or two.

Johnny Wholestaff isn't very good this year. His ERA is around 8.00, but that's artificially low because Johnny pitched against some teams that can't hit a D1 meat ball.

We may as well put position players on the mound as some of our "relief pitchers". There are a lot of teams in the Valley that have at least as good a chance in the league tourney as we do. Except for the fact that it's played in our yard.

4-1 week. We played 5 tough games, 3 of which were on the road and we came away with a 4-1 record. .800 is always good in baseball.

Now on to beating ORU! Revenge time!

Aargh, you're definitely right about Johnny. WSU's second-line pitching has not exactly inspired confidence this year. But it isn't always necessary to play a ton of games in the Valley tournament; the key is staying in the winners' bracket.

And with the Shocks playing at home, and especially if Lowell is back by then -- an if, to be sure -- I can't imagine any team that has a better chance of winning in four straight than WSU does. Granted, I'd hardly call WSU odds-on to do it themselves, but I'd pick them before anyone else. And, if it comes to that, whose second-line pitching would you have confidence in among Valley teams?

I'll install WSU as my favorite to win the tournament and prepare for the inevitable scoffing.

That is actually kind of a scary format. It all comes down to one game. And it could be a team's sixth game in the tournament. It will really test pitching.

On the other hand our hitting could be enough to overcome any pitching problems in a possible sixth game.

I really hope our team can finish strong and go 11-0 or 10-1 to close out the season. That way they can at least have a chance to get an at large bid if they make it to the championship game and lose.
