FCGU is easily the toughest opponent for the Shox so far this season, and possibly the biggest "sleeper" on the 2010 schedule. FCGU has won the Atlantic Sun regular season the last two seasons and is favored to three-peat. They return 7 starters and 8 pitchers from a team that batted .320 and had a 5.02 ERA in 2009. Currently, the Eagles are batting .386 and have a team ERA of 3.00. They have outscored opponents 89-35 in 8 games so far.
Lefty Chris Sale pitched 7 scoreless innings in his two starts (2.0ip, 22 pitches and 5.0ip, 80 pitches) and has not recorded a win. Sale was the Cape Cod Pitcher of the Year and All-Star MVP. He is receiving a lot of pub as a high draft in 2010.
On paper, the Eagles haven't showed a lot of pop at the plate - only 2HR so far with all games played in their home park. That appears to be very deceiving as they hit 74HR in 2009, with Maxfield (20), Roberson (19) and Greene (14) leading the way. All are back and the Shox better be careful with these guys. This team is very capable offensively and can score a lot of runs. They averaged 8.3 runs per game in '09.
Starting pitching for the series:
March 5 — Tim Kelley (RHP, 1-0, 3.38) vs. Chris Sale (LHP, 0-0, 0.00)
March 6 — Jordan Cooper (RHP, 1-0, 1.50) vs. Richie Erath (RHP, 2-0, 0.00)
March 7 — Charlie Lowell (LHP, 1-0, 6.75) vs. Patrick Nathanson (LHP, 2-0, 1.38)
Sale, Erath, and Nathanson all appear to be strike throwers with excellent control. Their K/BB ratio 174/49 (3.55) in 2009 was outstanding; however, Erath gave up a lofty .341 Opp BA in '09. Pitching numbers in the bullpen aren't very good overall. It looks like the Shox will need to try to knock the starters out and get into the bullpen .
It should be a fun weekend with pretty decent weather. Take me out to the ballgame!
