Ultimately, I think this is probably better for Coy, the WSU hoops program and the WSU baseball program.
It sounds like Coy has a higher upside in baseball than in basketball. Plus he can probably turn pro in 2 years (I'm assuming he will be a draft eligible).

I just think this means Johnny will be knocking Dreifort bombs over the scoreboard earlier in the spring than I thought. We are going to kill in baseball.

Problem is ... is there any partial schollies left for baseball. With the recent events, I'd say no. I'm not sure at this late in the game, I'd take any, or any portion, of a shollie away from any of the current players. JC made his choice and made it late. I'd love to have him on the baseball squad, but he pays his own way this year.

            Now, now

            Be nice, Doc.

DJA has consistently been a positive, constructive presence on here -- and it turned out that his speculation was right on the money. No reason to criticize him.

Besides, his main point was that this was probably work out best in the end for all concerned, and I personally think he's likely to be right about that, too. There have been questions, including some apparent concern within the basketball program, about Coy's ability to play SF defensively, and the Shocks are certainly deep at PF even without him. Meanwhile, he appears to be a better baseball prospect and better placed to compete for playing time. So this should be okay.

Actually it looks like Coy will be draft eligible next spring - so I suspect he's looking to turn pro in next year draft.

Yeah, I might put that likelyhood up there with death and taxes. I hope the kid has a great spring and really cashes in and that the baseball program gets some benefit out of his inclusion in our program.

I don't believe he'll be ready for that jump after one year. I believe he will play two years, still have good leverage as a junior-to-be, and see what is offered then. Not playing college ball last year has probably set him back a little and the pros know it. Unless he has a really good year, I don't expect him to be drafted that high.

Evidently it didn't hurt him that much to get named one the top prospects from summer ball.

He was already drafted out of H.S. in the 7th round and has likely moved up from his summer league performance. Question will be what will he do during the spring season? Next question is how much will his spring performance elevate him?

I admit I am a little cynical about this whole deal -

                      1. he was recruited to play basketball.

                      2. He has a decent summer ball and BA reports he's quiting baseball.

                      3. He denies it. Then he quits (you can't tell me that BA just made it up he was quiting baseball - either he told them or a family member did)

                      4. His story is two sports is just to much to handle and he want to focus on baseball

                      5. Then you find out he's going to be draft eligible next june.

It just reeks.... It is not good for basketball and it's not good for the baseball program to have 1 and done guys.

IMO, if the pros don't feel he has progressed much after two years, they will be less likely to want him (as high a round) as Philly did.

Thank you for the explanation rc20.

The prevailing opinion has always been that Gene Stephenson is a bit of a diva and PITA when it comes to his players and program. I think it's clear that for as long as Gregg Marshall is here improving his stock for the next rung on the ladder, that he easily claims this aura- over and above Gene.

Good luck to your brother (?) during his time in a Shocker baseball uni. I look forward to seeing him get it done over at The Eck.

I think it's probably best to let sleeping dogs lie and move on from here. It is what it is and the bottom line is that Johnny is still a Shocker.

Paul Suellentrop knows most everything that happened. First of all, the first time I or anyone else in our family knew Johnny was even thinking about quitting basketball was yesterday at 3:30 when Gregg Marshall called me at school and put me on speaker phone with Johnny right beside him. I hadn't talked to Marshall since the MVC Championship baseball game in Wichita last spring. He made Johnny get on the phone and tell me that he was leaving the team. Something I would do to an elementary student who got in trouble in my class. I was shocked. We all spoke on speaker phone for 30 minutes and things were aired out. I immediately called our dad and my sisters. We were all shocked. I then texted Suellentrop and told him Johnny had just left the team.

                                What I know for sure:
Before Johnny signed at Wichita, Coach Marshall and Coach Stephensen said they were like brothers and would easily work out a schedule so Johnny could play two sports. There would never be any issues was the promise made. Johnny could play summer baseball in St. Joseph or even the Cape and Coach Marshall would even attend some of the games to support Johnny (if he played in St. Joe), because "we are a family at Wichita State." It was agreed upon that Johnny could play fall baseball as long as he put in his individual workouts with the basketball squad. It was promised that both coaches would work togther so he could do both. Once basketball started in November everyone agreed no baseball until the season was over.
That is what Johnny signed up for.

                                What happened:
The few times the basketball coaches called me last spring all they did was complain about baseball. All I heard was that "they pay the freight on Johnny" and they are not going to change their schedules around baseball. This was during the spring baseball season. I knew then and there it was going to be tough. Johnny left to play summer baseball in St. Joseph and Coach Marshall never spoke to Johnny one time while he was gone. Never a call to see how lifting was going, never a call about anything. He was furious that Johnny was gone all summer like it was agreed upon. Gene called Johnny twice a week to check in on him and to see how baseball was going. Johnny never heard from Coach Marshall one time. In reality Johnny should have contacted him and I told him to call several times, but he chose to call assistant coaches. I know he was a little scared to call Marshall. I heard from several people that he was going to be really hard on Johnny once he got back. He deserved the extra hard treatment since he missed the entire summer.

A week before coming back Johnny got strep throat. The next week he came back and failed a physical they said was due to having symptoms of strep. I told Johnny he needed to gut it out and get back on coaches good side because he was so upset about the summer baseball. The next day Johnny came to his first small group workout (with strep) and worked out with his group. Marshall was all over him as expected about the summer and kicked him out of practice. I told Johnny he was just testing him and to do extra work. Johnny went back to the doctor the next day and it was discovered that he still had strep and he was ordered away from the team and school for a week. After that week, Coach Marshall was great to Johnny at the next two workouts. I told Johnny again that him getting kicked out of practice was just a test and he passed the test. Then a couple of days later I got a missed call at school from Suellentrop. I thought Johnny probably got thrown out of practice again. I called back and it was about the Baseball America article. I just laughed it off and said they were wrong. I even wrote a couple Baseball America writers to let them know it was false information. Everything was great!! Tuesday Johnny went to baseball practice and had a blast as usual. He had individuals for basketball on Wednesday (yesterday). Yesterday is when Johnny found out the two schedules would not allow him to play fall baseball as promised. There were now nightly basketball scrimmages for players only that he had to attend. There was no chance for him to play any fall baseball. You can imagine which coaches were upset. As I understand it, Johnny met with Gene yesterday morning and after the meeting he decided he had no choice but to pick a sport. He chose baseball and a few hours later I got the surprising call from Marshall that Johnny had left the basketball team. Obviously, other things were said by coaches, Johnny, etc, but you could probably make out the rest of the story. If Johnny were leaving the school it would be much easier to walk away from this, but I do not want people thinking Johnny was a player who left the basketball team on his own terms. He never wanted to leave the team.
While I appreciate you coming on here, and even with that info we still don't know everything, it seems to me like Johnny expected everything to work out without him having to do anything to help it.

Johnny played baseball in the spring and summer. It is now fall, and time to prepare for basketball season. No one can fault being sick, but when you are sick or injured, it takes twice the work daily to catch up to everyone else. This is impossible to do while still playing baseball. As a coach this would upset me also.

It seems to me that Johnny was more inclined to put forth the baseball effort (which is understandable due to the prospect of going pro) than basketball, since basketball was going to now take twice as much work.

This is nothing personal against anyone, sometime sh!t just happens and all you can do is do what you think is best for you. Apparently Coach Marshall, Coach Stephenson, and Johnny have done that. I think all will turn out ok, but it still is a sh!tty situation.
