              • Wandered down to the Eck this evening to have a look-see at the new turf under the lights. Some subjective observations from the peanut gallery:

-Overall, it looks straight fantastic! The limited colors and textures one can see from the webcam and the WSU AD database photos do it no justice at all. It will make a believer out of the "real grass" crowd.

-The material being used for the perimeter warning track isn't black, but actually dark brown. Similar in color to the turf that was just installed and removed from the infield "dirt". Very dark, but still brown. It's definitely not of "field turf" style construction. It's more of a traditional, old school "astro turf", like the green carpet we used to have. It has an integrated foam pad underneath, a very short nap, denser tufting, and doesn't appear designed to be used with any sort of infill. It also has a bit of a plastic-y sheen under the lights, which is somewhat unfortunate.

-The "field turf" used for the outfield grass, infield grass, and infield dirt doesn't seem to reflect light or appear shiny at all- like you sometimes see with "field turf" facilities under certain sun conditions and night lights. Who knows, I might be the only one who ever actually notices this trait in various "field turf" facilities, but IMO it is not a positive if you really want to look like real grass.

-If the new, revised WSU logo hasn't grown on you yet, or you still haven't decided if you like it or not, then it's use in the new Eck turf might make you come around. It looks muy bueno. World's better than the nondescript, bland, dated logo we just abandoned. The new logo actually looks like something that should be associated with an athletic department and it's programs, rather than some low-budget, student-designed logo for an academic college.

-Massive Baseball WU really does look cool, but even from the highest vantage point below the press booth and suites, you really can't see the form too well. You're still at too shallow an angle. It's still really cool, though.

                • I imagine the style of turf for the warning track is so that it feels distinctly different than the rest of the turf by "foot feel" alone. I'm looking forward to Saturday after the scrimmage so I, er my little boy, can run the bases.

I would bet Gene has had him out for a few drinks and a hot tub encounter at the Hawthorne estate.

Yes, very subtle difference in his interview between "infield" and "infeel" (in-fill). :)

If you drive by the stadium, there are a bunch of large bags sitting on pallets in the OF parking lot, I assume those are the in-fill product. At 4-5# per square foot, if my math is anywhere close, will require something like 350-400 tons of in-fill for the two fields. Yikes!

Looks like we have a new Shocker fan there. Good info on all the different types of materials used on the field. I'm a believer.

Watched that vid last night. Certainly good to hear a little more in-depth info on the field.

However, if that's the level of communication needed to secure a position in the higher levels of the sales food chain, then I've totally missed my calling in life. Good grief...
