A couple things in this thread to address ...

Just wait 'til Saturday when the hillbillies show-up from Springfield. The MSU baseball fans are the worst fans in the Valley.

The coaching staff needs to look in the mirror before they start lamenting the Shox performance tonight. Once the decision was made to save all front-line pitching for later, the players decided the game was over. Max Hutson has/had nothing to prove. He is not the same pitcher he was before his elbow reconstruction. He's a great kid, but, honestly, should be leading cheers and not much else. Following-up with Kemp, Maune, Guy, and Smith simply reinforced the "meaningless" message. Hell, take a look at the season stats and go backward up the list, that was tonight's pitching rotation.

Sure, the offense should have done something. Anything. It just got too easy to lay down and get to supper.

Funny thing is, Koenigstein will probably be tourney MOP or at least All-Tourney, yet his no-no had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the tournament. Perhaps, the voters will see through that ... or not.

A few more thing I was thinking about driving home ...

#1 - The Shox longest winning streak this season has been 4 games (twice). Now that the latest 4 game win streak is over, they can win 4 in a row again and wind-up in the championship round of a regional. No I don't really beleive that can happen, but if I can't dream I have nothing.

#2 - All the sCUm feel-good from tonight and the revenge factor for getting boat-raced last weekend could backfire. They go into tomorrow's game all cocky and running around together like little leaguers. MoSt's Meade slams the door HARD on them and they head back to Omaha.

#3 - If good pitching always beats good hitting, what does bad pitching do?

#4 - Ed Servais can take his brilliant "pod play" POS tournament format and stick it where the sun never shines. Game #2 between the 3 & 4 seeds in the field meaningless??? Gimme a break! Oh, and what about the game tomorrow betwee SIU and InSt? Thanks for coming ... now get out there and play a game for "pride" ... and oh by the way ... there are two buses idling in the parking lot.

Sorry, my mind wanders during 8 or so hours of baseball ...

        I have a question.

I wasnt able to listen to the game or anything last night. Had other stuff to do.

Where is all this meaningless talk coming from?
Was Mike and Gene on the radio just telling everybody "eh it doesnt matter what happens in this game."

I understand how a pod system works and that the W/L had no bearing in the pod breakdown.

But are really at that point where players/coaches/fans are just saying "Hey its ok the game was meaningless"

What a crock of horseshit. Someone should be very ashamed.

It was meaningless. The goal right now is to win the tournament and this game had no aspect that could help either team reach that goal.

To that end, pitchers were held back to set-up for Fri. and Sat.

If that isn't the definition of meaningless, what is?

The team's momentum that they had coming into this game grounded to a screeching halt. I don't think Creighton's pitcher made it to a count with 3 balls, and then our pitching staff couldn't buy a strike at times. I don't see WSU recovering very quickly from this loss--but I hope I'm wrong!

Towards the end of the game, it was funny to watch one of the Creighton fans get escorted out of the stands by security. Those sCUmmy fans were obnoxious all night long.

I can understand not throwing your little used pitcher and saving your guns. Ok thats fine. But whats the point of playing if we're just telling people its meaningless. Everygame means something so **** that

                No game is meaningless!
Not being mentally prepared, giving up, losing momentum, lack of concentration, etc... are all recipes for losing. Don't allow that devil to enter your competitive nature or you start accepting losing. You start making excuses for losing. And you become---- a loser.

Did the Shox really give up, or was the CU pitcher simply that good last night?
It will be interesting to see how the Shox play the rest of the way.

Never once in my life did I ever put on a uniform and not take it seriously. If I played my Grandma in a game of checkers, she better not have crowded the board or else I was going to send her a message via a crackerjack prize if need be.

I don't understand it....except that a lack of talent has as much to do with last night as the mindset, imho.

I give us no better than 50-50 tonight against ISU....and about 1 in 3 IF we advance against CU and 1 in 10 against MSU.

                  Nevertheless.....

                    Never say die.

Saw the entire game; CU looked much better than WSU. However we swept CU when it mattered and I think we can beat them again if needed. For now, let's beat Illinois State.

I think everybody is over reacting a little.

Granted the coaches probably told the players to get up and that it meant something. Saying it means something then going ahead and starting Max Hutson is saying one thing and doing another.

Players aren't retards, they know Hutson is not a starter.

                          Momentum

Hmmm...That may not have been exactly what Gene was looking for when he let his top pitchers have the night off. I'm not a big fan of the turn-on, turn-off approach, either. It doesn't even work that well when you have great talent, which this group of Shockers does not. So I hope they turn the offense back on even half as well today as they turned it off last night.

Still, more often than not, momentum in baseball stands on the pitchers mound. If Cooper steps up today, all will probably be well. Saturday, of course, is another matter altogether. But first, get this one.

Nobody 'told' the players that it was a meaningless game. The fans on the other hand, as I pointed out all night last night, knew it was meaningless. We swept sCUm when it mattered last weekend. When we knew this game had no bearing on our shot to reach a championship, I believe our team packed it in. sCUm meanwhile wanted revenge for the embarrassment they received last weekend. They were probably still crying from the run-rule and took it out on a Shocker team that didn't care. The end result - a run-rule with no hits.

The funny thing would be after sCUm and their fans celebrated like they had just won a national championship last night, got beat today, and a team that got no-hit because they knew it didn't matter, won today, and sCUm and their classy fans LOL sit at home and watch WSU and MSU on TV. :good:

It's a new day. And most importantly, it's a game that MATTERS.
