I don't know what his pitch count was, but I believe he was under 40 combining both games. Since he was playing first and also hitting it is not like he was sitting around in between.

As for what is proper...., someone smarter than me needs to answer that. If he were my son in the above situation, it would not have bothered me because of the low pitch count.

The pitching coach at Maize is Jamie Stiverson former Newman pitcher. Garret also has good parents and others around who are not part of the Maize baseball team to guide him in handling "situations" that might not be in his best interests.

The coaching staff at Maize seems to be IMHO made up of standup guys who would never intentionally misuse someone just for the sake of a ballgame.

It seems to me, that these questions are always so much easier to answer and the decisions always seem so obvious when I am not the one who has to make them. ;-)
I'm not an expert, indeed barely conersant with pitching techniques, but it seems like he kept his arm warm by playing 1b and the low pitch count, probably not harmful. I'd be more concerned if he threw two hard innings, sat in the dugout for 3 hours and then came into the game.

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

Gould throws for the win in the first game, yet is put back out on the mound for the save in the second game. I just do not think that it is right to do that to a young man's arm.
      Kelly,

Which one of Maize's rival schools did you attend?
I don't know any of you and so I'm not taking sides. kellykemnitz raised a fair question and provided some supporting evidence that the question was reasonable. Others have replied and explained; I would wonder if Brent did the same thing (i.e. have the same pitcher throw in a double-header (like the situation described)) but it's probably happened before at WSU. All in all, kellykemnitz asked a reasonable question.

Therefore, shockall is out of line with her/his snide remark in my opinion. If Gould happened to get hurt in a high school double-header because he wasn't sufficiently warmed up between the end of game 1 and the start of the ninth inning in game 2, what snide remark would shockall make? It never hurts to be really careful of arms.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Rocky is a good coach but lets not get crazy here. Maize was an outstanding program when wolgast (spelling) was coach and Rocky was an assistant or wasn't there at all. You can thank westurban and sluggers for a lot of thier success, same with Goddard.

Rocky was an assitant and was very good at hitting instruction when I was there. We spent more time on T's and Short toss hitting than anything else. Learned a ton about hitting mechanics though.

          Nice uncalled for cheap shot.

Hell, Kelly didn't even factor in his pitch count from his TUESDAY start against BC. What's that, 2 days rest????

I can appreciate all your concerns for Garretts arm, am I'm sure the organization he signs with would appreciate them too.

who cares if he signs or not, still don't want to see him blow his meal ticket before he actually gets drafted.

Definately do not want him to blow his arm out.......but...I didn't hear anyone concerned about taking care of his arm during his summer program or during his winter workouts. His high school time should be the least worthy of your worry, as he is under constant scrutiny of his capable coaches at Maize.

Everyone must remember that he will have Major League scouts present at every game he pitches. Garrett, alone, makes the decision on what type of show he will present to them....in his own interest....

I can't speak to what KK has knowledge of or what she was basing her comment on. Nor did I say Maize was mistreating his arm. I simply resonded to william who as usual was acting like his name. In short who wants a kids arm to blow.....thats all.

Also your original remark regarding high school rivalries is a joke at best. Seriously do you sit around and follow your former high school team and hate the other high schools?

I suspect this Kelly Kemnitz is exactly who he says he is....Kelly Kemnitz, a former Maize High athlete and a very good man. If my response came across as curt or snide, I am offering a sincere apology to him.

It is also my understanding that Gould threw 71 pitches over 4 innings vs. Bishop Carroll on Tuesday. My guess is that Wednesday was leg work and running, Thursday was light catch, and that Friday would be a bullpen day if no game.

Once again, KK asked a reasonable question and I hope I gave a reasonable explanation based on my knowledge. It is also my understanding that each of the MHS pitchers are on pitch counts of about 70 pitches this early in the season.

I do remember Joe Auer who was the Wichita Heights coach during Pelfrey's career there, throwing MP at state in Lawrence. Then bringing him back on very short rest to pitch in the championship vs. Derby during MPs junior year....if I recall correctly the Derby catcher hit a bomb off of him no less than a country mile. What a great story to be able to tell your kids about.
