This game has simply passed Gene and JT by. If it weren't for the pitching staff this team would have been pathetic by at least WSU minimal standards for the last decade. Try recruiting a guy over 5'11" that can stick. It's pretty bad when the Sonic HR inning comes around and they're touting Lassley as a slugger. Good luck to that contestant!!

It's time for Gene and JT to go and it has been for some time. This program started going downhill after Hibbs left. Bottom line for this program is the coach's are paid to win, not compete against scrub D1 teams.

Facts are the facts. Even last year vs. Oklahoma State. I was at the Championship game in Stillwater but even I knew it didn't matter which team won because they were just going to be Florida State's whipping post. I'm not saying WSU hasn't had some great hitters but they have lacked power for several years now. They're too concerned with getting the runt that can track down a flyball and then steal a base after they get a walk or maybe a single. The college game has changed and if you cannot hit for power you WILL NOT win and defense is now secondary.

The game could cycle back to pitching and defense but that will not happen anytime soon unless the college game goes to wood bats.

This team hasn't hit consistently for a LONG time. If you're going back to 1998 to talk about hitting, that's a decade, plus a year. Our identity will always be pitching, but our hitting has been pretty spotty. We can still recruit pitching talent, because they know they'll get better and get MLB looks working with Brent. If that's true for pitching, then the opposite might be true for hitting. What's Phil or Standiford doing these days? You know Gene will never can JT, but maybe he can bring in somebody fresh to "assist?"

When looking at team numbers vs. "higher quality" opponents played so

far this year, (meaning those with an RPI of less than 200), this team is

            hitting a cool .224 with 1 HR.

Hey, but it's okay. Living in denial is a way of life in Shockerland.

Dude nobody is denying the fact they are not hitting well. Some of you are just in denial that there is 7 new players on the field at once. they haven't played 20 games yet in their career and you seem to think the sky is falling.

Agreed. However, you would think at least one freshman out of the bunch would be putting up numbers that would eventually place him in Freshman All-American consideration. We are Shocker baseball and we should be recruiting these types of players.

                Thus far, nada.

It's not even about denial. What's the excuse for over the last decade or more of no power and relatively poor offensive numbers. Why is it that Brent can have a dominant staff year in and year out but the hitting is basically at a DII level. Brent's not going to make any excuses about his staff being 'young'. That's just stupid. The best thing for this program is Gene to find a nice piece of tail and move on and take JT with him. You all can throw him the party he deserves because he did take nothing and turn it into what was the premier program.

I love how on SN when a poster - good or bad, grammar correct or incorrect - challenges our offensive woes, he's gets shot down and borderline flamed.

Simple fact here people: 1 season out of every 8 or 10 with solid offense is a statistical anomaly, 7 seasons out of 8, or 9 seasons out of 10 with average (at best) hitting is a statistical trend.

Which one would you hang your hat on if you were a betting man?

Many on SN continue to deduce any way possible to rationalize our lack of hitting prowess. A limited few will face reality, but keep our mouth shut in the twilight zone-esque world of internet forum logic.

The bottom line here is that until we figure out how to hit on a consistent basis, or perhaps hire a new hitting coach, we will continue to be "that pitching school" who used to be a national power, but is now relegated to the outside fringe of the top 25, with the occasional regional final appearance, and even less occasional SR appearance.

Gene definitely hit the nail on the head when he said he created a monster. People get used to success and there's nothing wrong with that and success is very subjective.

I guess going to Omaha has been the measure for so many years and they simply don't have a team Omaha capable and haven't had one for several years now. Whatever the cause there are teams that get to the CWS on a regular basis and this program no longer does so.

I agree..........BUT show me a school in a non SUMMER climate that has gotten to the CWS on a "regular" basis. It will always be a situation where those schools have a tremendous advantage not only because of the bias, but now that so many schools have realized baseball can be a revenue generator are putting significant resources into their programs. Gene, JT, and Brent realized this years ago, where ahead of the curve and benefitted from it for many years. I think EXPECTING the Shocks to go to the CWS every year is unrealistic. Don't forget, all you naysayers bagging on the hitting and bragging on our pitching; we were only one win away from a CWS berth last year. If I remember, it wasn't just the hitting that let us down.

Thats my 2 cents. We are what we are, and unless we can't win the Valley Tourn will be in the post season once again. The weekend rotation looks to me that it will give us a shot to be successful, and by then; the 7 new hitters on this team will have had an opportunity to get it figured out. How many times have you seen Freshman who can't hit early...figure it out. Ryan Jones was aweful his freshman year, seems to be a pretty decent hitter the last couple.

Are people really this stupid? Please list the head coaches you know would do better at WSU. WSU baseball has been to the Sweet 16 the past two seasons and it's like it doesn't matter. Check the recent success of local schools such as OU and OSU, who have many more resources. Their success is no better than WSU.

You only have to go back to 2004 to find a darn good offensive team that the pitching let down in the regional final. People forget baseball is a team game. Those fast guys who hit singles are helping the pitchers when they are on defense.
