Didn't somebody draft Randy Walter when he couldn't hit a curve ball?
Well they say that Joe Carter couldn't hit a curve ball either. And to be honest he didn't real well at the time but being the player of the year kind of overshadows that.
Randy Walter was no Joe Carter
    No he wasn't.

He didn't practice with the Shocks but he did practice with ASU. A kid of that calibur has probably found a way to work on his swing everyday.

Don't be surprised if he comes in and starts right away.

Found this to be interesting in light of what his brother said about Johnny's draft status:

NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2 Amateur Status if Professional in Another Sport
A professional athlete in one sport may represent a member institution in a different sport.
However, the student-athlete cannot receive institutional financial assistance in the second sport
        unless the student-athlete:
        (a) Is no longer involved in professional athletics;
        (b) Is not receiving any remuneration from a professional sports organization; and
        (c) Has no active contractual relationship with any professional athletics team. However, an
individual may remain bound by an option clause in a professional sports contract that
requires assignment to a particular team if the student-athlete’s professional career is
        resumed.

          Financial aid

Denny, the way this is typically handled is that an in-demand player will sign pro in baseball but require as part of his contract that the organization pay for his college. That way he doesn't need financial assistance from the college any more but still gets his schooling paid for.

The good news in this is that if it happened, and Coy continued to want to play basketball as his brother has said, it would free up his basketball scholarship to go to someone else. In effect, he'd be a walk-on with the money coming from his baseball team.

That's good news. If I'm right if he plays baseball this year by his 5th year he can play basketball and sign a pro contract opening up another schollie.

DH and middle order guy? Third base and three hole hitter? Any thing like that would make my day.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

I heard Stephenson talking about Johnny late in the KGSO pre-basketball broadcast.

Gene had a chance to watch Johnny take some BP and had nothing but positive things to say. Quick hands. Adjusts well.

Gene says Johnny is at 215 now and expects him to end up at 235 - 240.

I'd be surprised to see Johnny on the field this year. The hardship trfr has to get past the NCAA and I think Johnny might need a fall practice at WSU. Johnny would have to be a truly exceptional player to join the baseball team in March and move ahead of guys who've been playing.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

I kinda get what your saying except did Johnny not spend the fall practicing with ASU?

                    Coy

He did indeed, Ta. The hardship waiver hasn't been granted yet, and I don't know for sure how it would apply anyway -- but extreme rust is not likely to be Coy's problem.

I haven't heard anything yet. They were saying early march is when they expected the NCAA to figure it out at earliest. Shouldn't be to much longer I wouldn't think.

Johnny belongs on the court not the ballfield. My two cents but regardless of events I hope he's successful.

                              Go Johnny!!

How have you come to that conclusion exactly? Have you seen him play either? Seems to me that if he fits in one sport more than the other it may well be baseball, being that he was drafted in the 7th round out of high school. Now that's not my .02. That is just based on the information we have on him and what I have seen of him on the court from high school clips. I haven't seen him play baseball at all. Gene says he has very quick hands though and is much better at the plate than you would expect a 6'7" guy would be. He definitely has power but he really likes to pull it over the fence from what I've heard. Anyways I'm just curious how you've reached the conclusion that he belongs on the court and not the field?
