  • Update on new field turf?

Does anybody have an update on the new field turf at Eck Stadium? I looked on shockernet.net and on goshockers.com, but no updates. If you have any pictures, please post. Only 90 days til the first game.
It is a great day to be a SHOCKER!!!!

As of Saturday, Nov 15, turf installation is delayed due to administrative delays with i doting and t crossing. Turf will be replaced with a newer version of the same type of turf and will be in the exact same confguration as the current covering. Brandon Cutler (Grounds Keeper) is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the turf so he can work his tail off during the coldest months of the year.

Might I add that whenever I go there for summer showcase tournaments, the field always looks in excellent shape.

          The exact same setup?

          No new sexiness?

Thanks for the update 00, but this little bit bothers me:

Please... PLEASE tell me you don't mean that 100% literally? We're replacing nasty looking, archaic astroturf with fieldturf, correct? Surely we're not replacing nasty looking, archaic astroturf with more nasty looking, archaic astroturf, are we?

And I'd have to agree with SF, I was truly hoping that we might take this opportunity to not only replace the turf, but do it in a way that looks more traditional and natural, which fieldturf allows for. The all-turf look with just dirt around the bases and the mound looks seriously dated. I gag everytime I see Tropicana Field on TV for just this reason.

Oh well, it will be nice to have some progress no matter.

What is the point if they are going to use the old crappy Astroturf again?

Gene & Brandon toured some FieldTurf installations over the summer and felt that it played too slow for their style of play (more like real grass) so they opted for AstroTurf for its speed.

You gotta be kidding. Very disappointing. I guess we should just forfeit games on real grass, because they don't fit our style of play.

This has got to be a bad dream.

So we get to continue to have the playing field that's the universal running joke in the college baseball world?

There's honestly not a smiley to convey my disappointment in this news. At this point, I'm really glad I didn't contribute to Phase I.

                    Embarrassing...

Seems to me you guys want what looks good and Gene wants what plays good. I'll go with Gene on this one. I think gene is making the right decision if it plays better and after all that why we field the team is to play and not just to gather and look at pretty grass. I go to see the games played and not to look at the pretty or not grass. But that's just me. I think the facility is beautiful as is and dont think the infield turf would add that much to its beauty.

Thanks for reading my mind, incorrectly. I don't care so much about the looks as the fact that the field turf is actually similar to GRASS, which is what the game is supposed to be played on. They will also play many of their most important games on GRASS, so why not play on something similar all year. I was really hoping for the field turf infield with the all dirt basepaths, you know, like fields have been for a century. If you want to call me a purist, I guess I'm guilty, but it is about much more than appearance. I'm also guessing the coaching staff is split on this, as I can't imagine Brent not wishing for a little bit slower infield surface.

I'd agree with you to some extent, except for the fact that by the time this is put in, Gene & Co. will be virtually the last holdout in all of college and professional baseball with astrotruf instead of fieldturf or grass.

The angle that Gene and yourself are supporting just doesn't hold water when no one else is saying it. Fieldturf's playability seems to work just fine for 1/2 of the MLB World Series this year, but it somehow doesn't for college ball?

I was never attempting to read your mind or anyone elses for that matter. Just filling in the blanks based off what you typed. If you don't want it to be taken a particular way then I suggest you be more clear. No need to take what I said offensively, It wasn't meant in a malicious way. I just get tired of the crap that gets tossed genes way when he clearly knows whats best for this team and these facilities. I understand your a purist and I can get with that. I don't however think we should turf our field to match those of our competition though just so we aren't at a disadvantage. I think it is actually to our fielders advantage to be accustomed to handling a fast infield. Seems to me playing on real grass after that with a slower roll would be that much easier. That's how it should work at least in theory.

Like I said I think its to our infielders advantage handling a fast infield. When we go on the road or play on slower surfaces our guys should be that much better prepared. I think that has to be Genes reasoning. Its logical in theory. I could care less what everyone else is doing and who the hell is first or last to do something. Its not an issue I don't think of everyone else nor should it be. The angle your supporting here doesn't hold water any more than anyone else's if all it is, is... Well everyone else is doing it. Who the hell cares what anyone else is doing.
