I think these types of clauses in contracts are really starting to draw the ire of people in baseball. I wouldn't be surprised to see a rule change soon.

Yep. Gets him on the 40 man and starts the clock. Not sure this was the right move politically speaking for Connor. Hopefully he'll earn the promotion on merit soon enough.

.269 between rookie and single-a and called up? And hitting is his biggest skill.

No kidding this was something kept under wraps. I find it funny the GM says he believes he is a "fast-track player"

Oh well good luck but I find this whole thing kinda funny myself..

Connor must be an extremely important factor in the Giants' organization for these demands to be met.

            Way ta go CG.

            ... No really, deuces.

Probably more so that it saved them a few hundred thousand in bonus with virtually no cost by throwing on the sept call up list since they would probably be better off losing all these games anyways. The clock isn't as key for a college hitter with a refined bat. Either he'll be good enough or he won't and they will probably be able to figure that out soon enough to where it won't bite them. He doesn't project out to every being a high level FA so no biggie there either.

The biggest cost to the Giants is probably in precedent setting, but they probably figure that if they can keep the clause from getting to the media, they won't suffer to much there either.

Hot, can you walk us through the benefits and possible drawbacks to starting the clock early?

I don't want to speak for Hot, but I think that it is a win/win for Conor. Every professional player gets "vested" after so many innings of being on a 40 man big league roster, I want to think it is around 300 games, but that is just a guess. Once they become vested, they are eligible for benefits that extend well past their playing days. The fact that Conor can get 20 games toward that vestment by the end of his draft year is very good.

Once again, I think that is the benefit but I could be all wet. Either way, it is a great deal for Conor and I wish him the best!

that clause is nothing new. it has been around for quite a while. cant say how often that its been used just that it isnt new.

The Giants come into Phoenix for a four-game series versus the Diamondbacks (who I have season tickets for). If he gets in, it would likely be pinch-hitting in the pitcher spot. That said, I couldn't tell you the Giants starting lineup (outside of Vizquel, Randy Winn, and Bengie Molina), and I've seen the Giants 4 times in spring training and 5 times at Chase Field (including a few times on TV). They've probably used 50 guys total this season before September call-ups.

So seeing Conor called-up, while a surprise, isn't much of one, as the Giants are trying to find the magical players for next season.
