It doesn't look like "all the teams are ranked solely on their winning percentage".
School: Winning Percentage Ranking: NPI ranking:
      UC Irvine 20 10
      Oklahoma State 20 14
      Georgia Tech 32 22
      Texas 44 23
      Charlotte 10 25
      Stanford 53 29
      Missouri State 19 33
      Clemson 120 66
      Nevada 94 137
2008 College Baseball Nolan Power Index (NPI): Nolan Power Index (NPI) - a ranking of teams based on their win percentage and strength of schedule (their opponents' average win percentage and their opponents' opponents' average win percentage) and sometimes additional or bonus factors such as game location or site or margin of victory.

LOFL....I'm happy that you like Nolan's NPI

In rating conferences on NPI, he does have the ACC as the #1 conference...that looks about right, I reckon you agree?

He has the Missouri Valley conference behind the Colonial Athletic, Sunbelt, Southern, etc...at the #12 conference...looks about right, don't you agree?

Yeah..he uses SOS, but not to any real degree...Canesius (SOS of #245) is ahead of WSU (SOS of 45)...what you think? That WSU's 45-17 record is worse than Canesius' 40-13? Considering that, at SOS #245, Canesius played a schedule similar to some Florida high schools.

I don't buy Nolan's NPI....regardless of how "right" he is about the ACC, about Miami, FSU, North Carolina, finishing #1, 2, and 3..etc.

I never said Nolan was perfect or even correct. I think Boyd's ranking and Nolan's ranking both have flaws. Heck they don't even agree on RPIs. I offered my personal opinion of which system I prefer and distrust less. if I'm wrong ... :D

Well, I didn't write "there appears to be no algorithimn..just a straight line ranking on winning percentage." An actually comparison of winning percentage rankings and NPI rankings shows that that statement was incorrect. I wonder who wrote that???

Maybe someone needs to improve his reading skills, Billy. ;-)

I guess I should have used my language in the previous post..

"I should like the Nolan NPI...it does have Miami as #1 and and North Carolina at #2, with FSU at #3...But..it seems heavily loaded towards winning percentage"

He does use the SOS, or so his chart maintains..but in some cockamamy manner that does nothing. Unless you really believe that Canesius was so much stronger than Rice. .

How does he reconcile an SOS of #245 with a team who plays with an SOS of #12 (Rice)? He doesn't. Not successfully. How is Canesius stronger than the Shockers?

I think that some guys are too lazy to question what he is doing..(I admit I couldn't see he was using SOS in an algorithimn... and that I still don't).

But, I do recognize the complete silliness of what he has done with Canesius, Oral Roberts, and Coastal Carolina...and that throws a pall over his whole system.

I am in complete agreement with you on this point. What you fail to do is look at the failings of Boyd's system. In the end, it doesn't really matter; it's the summer and we're waiting for the big fall sport - volleyball!!! :D

The best predictor of a top-caliber team that can be gleaned from nolans site is in the nitty gritty report, teams with a winning percentage of .650 against the top 50 tend to be the best and end up in omaha, nothing else really matters. If a team can't consistently beat the top 50, hosting regionals, win-loss records, sos, and rankings really don't do them any good in the post-season. Occasionally a team like fresno comes through, but I wouldn't go to vegas making bets that things like that will happen very often.

I don't follow Boyd either....there is not a "system" without a lot of discussion points. I generally look at teams that win against some good teams....and I know that "good" is subjective and subject to bias. We all tend to think more highly of teams with which we have some familiarity.

But, if they beat 'em in the Regionals, beat 'em in the Super Regionals, you have an idea that a team can play ball (if only for that time period).

Now that track and baseball have wound out. yep, fall sports are on the way...

Down here, we are already playing women's soccer and volleyball...but who cares? Football is looming.
