  • 10 YEARS OF THE 64 TEAM TOURNAMENT

Well it has been 10 years since the ncaa went to a 64 team tournament in baseball, so I thought, why not take a look at how everyone has faired. In my opinion tournament records are the most level playing fields of all due to the fact that it is late in the season with good weather, there aren't any strength of schedule arguments to make, and every team is playing for keeps. I compiled these won-loss records of teams that have played a minnimum of 15 tournament games and I hope I didn't leave anyone out.
There seems to be about four groups of teams that emerge from this, teams that have won consistently, teams that have a good winning percentage but have not amassed the staggering win totals of the first group, teams that hover around .500, and the group that is not listed which is teams that slip in the back door from time to time but get beat up.

    Group 1-

    STANFORD 56-22
    CAL ST. FULLERTON 55-24
    RICE 55-25

    CLEMSON 38-20
    WICHITA ST. 21-19

    Group 2-

    GEORGIA 31-15
    ARIZONA ST. 29-19
    OREGON ST. 27-6
    NEBRASKA 27-19

    Group 3-

    TULANE 24-20
    USC 22-12
    BAYLOR 22-17
    GEORGIA TECH 22-17

Great work William! What would it take to list the number of H-A-N games in that mix?

Top 20 in the 'new' format. I guess that makes us a Top 20 program? Is that a surprise reallly?

Oh ya, not bad for a mid-tier team.
      Deuces Valley.
      ... No really, deuces.

Does total number of games mean much? WSU is close to the top of number of games played in group 3.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

I separated the groups because of disparity of winning percentage.

although a case could be made to include usc, maybe miss state or alabama into group two but the win totals really aren't there.

Should OREGON STATE'S record be 27-16?

So Oregon State, with their two national championships, is in the second tier?

Yes, since we haven't been to the CWS since 96 and have only been to two Super Regionals.

                    What's your point?

I wonder if we have tried to schedule those other group 3 teams, those would be great games. I know we have played usc, ok st., arkansas, ou,and maybe notre dame.

I would say so. They had two awesome years, but they also failed to make the tourney this year. I think you'd have to look at the complete body of work, and not individual seasons (in this particular analysis).

Since the tournament expanded, WSU has competed in 9 of the 10 tournaments.

Their records, by location, are as follows:

                              Home 7-7

                              Away 4-10

                              Nuetral 9-2

I only show 20 wins so I must have missed one along the way. I wonder what the breakdown of H-A-N games are from some of the other successful schools.....I wonder if FSU, Miami, Texas, LSU, UNC and USC have played 14 true away games COMBINED?
