  • Discussion Of FSU

Hey yall...FSU fan here...Just wanted to introduce myself and tell you a little about the FSU experience and welcome you to discuss the upcoming FSU-Wichita State Series with FSU fans at Section B...

    FSU Message Board

All you need to know about FSU traditions, cheers, stats, and the Animals

Should be a fun series and an electric environment. I am not a member of the Animals but they are very entertaining and fun. ESPNet Sportszone even called The Animals "The best college baseball cheering section in the country."

    Welcome. Two questions:

    How's attendance been?

Why haven't you ever been to Wichita to play?

Welcome. I expect some great baseball. How many people do you think will be at these games?

I can only answer the first question...If will be a full house...6500 for each game. Earlier this season against Miami, the three game series totaled 20,000+

It's too bad the games aren't going to be in Wichita where capacity crowds in excess of 8000 would fill the ECK while hundreds more would tailgate outside.

I certainly hope the Noles grace us with 11 hits, 4 walks and 4 Es per game.

              :wsu_posters: :goshocks: :posterwu: :posterwsu:

I think our road schedule next year should consist of 2 games outside the state of Kansas.......preferably against SEMO.

SaD: What is your take on this? How often did Florida State leave the south? Why hasn't FSU played at Eck Stadium? The following teams did come to Wichita and play at Eck during the last two (regular) seasons: Arizona State, CS Fullerton, KSU, KU, Oklahoma State, Long Beach State, Nebraska, Oral Roberts, OU, South Alabama, TCU, Washington State, etc.

If the SEC were to ask me how they might get their game back (no, I'm not waiting by the phone) one suggestion I'd make is to start playing non-conference schedules that involves leaving the south to face quality opponents. SEC teams seem to prefer playing comfortable non-conference schedules composed almost exclusively of home games vs. regional opponents rather than preparing themselves to face the best teams in the nation by leaving home and seeing how they stack up against the better teams across the nation.

In 2008 the twelve teams of the SEC played only 24 non-conference games outside the region. In these contest they went 11-13. Arkansas accounted for nine of those games, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Vanderbilt played three each. Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State and South Carolina never left the south. The SEC played 97% of their games in the South. Win-loss records built on schedules like this are deceptive. The performance of the SEC in the College World Series over the last ten years bears this out.

After the field of 64 was announced there were a lot of upset Big-12 fans, count me among them. The selection committee invited nine teams from the SEC despite the conference being in decline and...
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

I am glad it will be full as that is all you can ask for. Last year we added bleachers so we could get to darn 9000 (I'm sure there were 9000 people there even if officially it was under).

Tell us more about your park, ie if it is known to be more pitcher or hitter friendly. Lots of foul space? Weird angles?

Also talk about your 1-2-3 pitchers, as in one type of pitchers they are (fastballers, crafty left handers, etc). These are the types of tidbits I love to hear about.

Finally, I like to know about the leader(s) of your team. Who are the guys that helped take your team from being down to Florida (right?) and staring at the end of the season to coming back and just pounding everyone else in that regional.

So are we, and seriously, here's to a hard fought, competitive series.

We have enjoyed some really big post season games in the past. No reason not to continue the tradition.

Should be a great week leading up to this weekend. Will be interesting to see if WSU starting pitching can tame the FSU bats. Couldn't ask for a better environment - even though I wished it was in Wichita, least it will be televised.

Our park is VERY unique. Normal in left and center, bur right field is around '320 with a 25 or 30 foot screen. It's a bit of a short porch, but you have to hit it pretty high. We also have the circus up sometimes outside the right field fence. J.D. Drew hit it a couple times.. I hope no Shockers do. ;)

Our 3 pitchers are Matt Fairel, Elih Villanueva and Geoff Parker. Fairel is a draft-eligible sophomore, lefty.. pretty good stuff.. low 90's. Villanueva is a big hefty right handed JUCO transfer. He has been great for us this year.. also low 90's. Geoff Parker is also a big right hander. He is a Freshman and has shown a lot of promise if he can consistently get ahead in the count. Control is his "Issue".

As far as the leaders and the line-up it looks like this..

Tyler Holt - Freshman lead-off hitter. Reached base in every game this season until the ACC tourney. Got into a slump in the ACC tourney but just had a HUGE regional. Went 5-6 today.

Jason Stidham - Freshman all-american last year.. struggled at times this season but is coming off a big Regional.

Buster Posey - ACC Player of the Year, Collegiate Player of the year, will be Golden Spikes player of the year. Hitting .470 with 24 homers and 86 RBI's. He is basically just a man among boys.

Jack Rye - Also been around .400 most of the year. Senior leader.

Dennis Guinn - 2nd on the team with 17 home runs this year. Has been in a minor slump as of late. Another Senior leader.

Tony Delmonico - Transfer from Tennessee, dad is first base coach.. Hitting .375 on the year.. either leads or is close to the lead in errors in the ACC. Plays shortstop and has really struggled defensively.

Stuart Tapley - Freshman sensation.. the guy can just hit. Struggled the first half of the year in the field but has really turned it around as of late. He will be special at Florida State.

Tommy Oravetz - Left handed DH.. Hitting around .345. He's been a big surprise.

Ohmed Danesh - Left handed left fielder. Platoons with Freshman Mike McGee in left. Both have been great for us. Danesh is hitting around .290 and McGee is up over .300

                        Hope that helps out some!

I'm expecting this series to be a polar opposite of last year's super with UC-Irvine. No pitchers duels.

                              Regarding Dick Howser:

The playing surface dimensions measure 320 feet to right field, 400 feet to center and 340 feet to left. Prior to the 1986 season, a screen was added to the top of the right field wall, increasing in five-foot increments from 20 feet in the power alley to 30 feet in right field - giving a unique effect.

Stadium capacity increased to 6,700 as additional seats were added during the two-year construction process. Florida State annually ranks in the top 10 nationally in attendance.

                              Regarding Pitching:

Top 4 guys are Fairel, Villanueva, Parker, and Strauss

None are overly dominating but each is pretty consistent. They hit their marks and each probably touch LOW 90's.

The unquestioned leader is Buster Posey...Batting .467 this season with 24 HR. Will probably be the number 1 overall pick on Thursday. Is great behind the plate, I THINK he threw out around 42% of potential basestealers this season.

                              Other Players of Note:

Jack Rye, RF is batting 4th and is over 400 also. Has a cannon for an arm.

Guinn 1b, seems to always have a clutch hit.

Delmonico, SS also a team leader

I would also say Frosh starters Holt and Tapley and Soph. Stidham have been very good.

Offensively, All nine can hit the ball.
