It's tough to argue with any of their choices. Both Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year were pretty close this season. Dirks, Gillaspie & Musgrave will hopefully just have to settle for many post-season honors.

How Andy Dirks is not Valley Player of the Year is beyond me, Douglas had a great year, but not that much better than Dirks and last I checked the team Andy Dirks plays on won the conference championship while UNI finished 4th. I am just stunned and I bet Mike and Terry are as well. I thought if not Andy than maybe Conor.

Another gripe how in the hell is Shafer honorable mention and Guido Fonseca of UNI is 2nd team?

      Shafer 9-3 2.65 ERA
      Fonseca 8-2 4.55 ERA

Good point, I would much rather have a regular season championship and a tournament championship, than post season awards.

Just for comparison's sake, these are from the Valley website:

          Conor Gillaspie .403 avg, 59 runs, 65 rbi, 79 h, 13 d, 8 t, 7 hr, 129 tb, .658 slugging %, .491 ob %, 16-18 stolen bases

          Brandon Douglas .402 avg, 50 runs, 58 rbi, 86 h, 23 d, 4 t, 10 hr, 147 tb, .687 slugging %, .449 ob %, 10-10 stolen bases

          Andy Dirks .386 avg, 69 runs, 49 rbi (out of the leadoff spot), 83 h, 18 d, 3 t, 9 hr, 134 total bases, .623 slugging %, .502 ob %, 24-28 stolen bases.

Andy even had a better BA in conference only games.

            .460 for Dirks
            .426 for Douglas

(note to self: Let it go, nothing you can do about it)

I understand, but this comes down to the argument again of does the award go to the player who had the best year on the best team or just the player who had the best year regardless of which team he is on. All three had great years. I'm betting that with both Conor and Andy having such great years that they stole votes away from each other and that is what allowed Douglas to win the award.

The player who had the best year should in my opinion win it, but when the numbers are this close than I think the fact WSU won the conference and UNI got 4th should play some part in the decision. But you are probably correct in that Conor and Andy took votes from each other and probably aided in Douglas winning the award.

How about Andy wins the Valley Tournament MVP!!!!!!!!!!

                    I agree with Sek.

We got hosed on POY. We finish first and we don't win a Pitcher of the Year or Player of the Year??? I guess it's because of our balance?

I dunno. Douglas had a good year, but his team finished 4th and he didn't do as good as Dirks did in conference play.

                    I think it's pretty lame.

But like you guys have said, I'd rather have the conference title than the postseason awards.

The best payback for Dirks is for him to have a monster Valley Tournament and make the voters realize they made a mistake. Same with Shafer.

Ryan Jones not even getting honorable mention is probably the worst snub of any of them. The guy had a very solid year all the way through.

That is an excellent point, I was to wrapped up in Dirks and Shafer that I didn't even pay attention to Jonesy being completely snubbed.

Wow. You're right. I didn't think of it.

What a bunch of WSU haters. Another reason to hate the Valley in baseball.
