I hope he doesn't retire at the end of the, he is still a GREAT coach.

Maybe when he does retire we can just get a good alum to coach the team....Eric Wedge?

With the success Wedgie has had in the pros I doubt he'll be leaving them for some time.

Oh I know that the chances of it are VERY slim, but how sweet would that be...

to address the title of the thread...

            no.
call me conservative, but i like what gene brings to the table. im sure there are many players out there that just come to WSU to play for the renowned gene stephenson.

i like gene's aggresive coaching style too.

unless Wedge were to drop into our laps I'd like gene to be our coach until he dies. he kind of deserves it. like Joe paterno. gene is WSU baseball.

            just my thoughts and opinion.

I understand what you are saying but IMO you are way off base on this part. When you are dealing with baseball recruits – individuals, who eat, live and breathe baseball – WSU is still an elite name. The facilities speak for themselves. Human nature dictates that people (especially impressionable 18 year old recruits) like to be pampered with the finer things; and they’ll receive 5-star treatment at WSU – unlike KU or KSU (or darn near any BCS school for that matter) which you point out. And as far as the name recognition, I can’t tell you how many times on the east coast people naturally equate WSU to college baseball. If it weren’t for that then I’m not sure it would receive much, if any national recognition from coast to coast.

Bottom line – if you’re going to compare WSU to schools such as KU and KSU (and I would venture >75% BCS), we shouldn’t lose recruiting battles based upon the things mentioned above.

He recruits the players who swing and pitch the ball. It's clear this team is lacking in certain areas and that fall on him.

He's also responsible for motivating his team. Gene is always fond of saying "Maybe the game has passed him by" - well maybe it has.

Or maybe he's just spending to much time chasing skirts instead of recruits (recruits that can hit)?

He talked about his fears that teh team was looking past the team last night and how he has warned them and talked to them about it on multiple occasions. He talked to the guys at the plate in the 9th and told them what they needed to do... get the damn ball in play. When Josh is striking out swinging for the damn fence instead of just getting his bat on the ball Gene cant do anything about it! Get off his ass and realize that 18 year old kids dont always listen. i'm sure you were the perfect college student and son at that age. Always listening to your teachers and following their advice to the tee right... yeah I bet you were.

                            Retire?

To answer the original question requires a total of five words:

                            1. Why?

                            2. No.

                            3-5. Besides, he won't.

There are certainly good candidates for when the time comes. Loren Hibbs is one, Travis Wyckoff another. But the time isn't here.

Has anyone thought that maybe Gene won't have the final say in this? If the stalking complaint lives on, Gene may not.
