    We hardly knew the guy.
True, but thats $100k more than he had. He may also have injured himself next year and never played again...etc

Hmm...$100,000 and start your professional baseball career for maybe the best developmental organization in the sport or return to play for Butler and pitching coach to be named later? Probably will get much more of the remainder of the degree paid for this way as well. There's a reason why STL got him inked for under slot. He had about as much leverage as a college senior.

Disagree completely about Sam's leverage, KS. He had TWO years of eligibility left, so he had plenty of time to recover and re-establish himself next season (or even later) as much more than an 8th rounder -- IF (and it's a big if) all goes well.

Having said that, I'll add that with his history of injury, plus WSU's uncertain (to be charitable about it) situation, plus a chance to play for a superior organization and bank $100K (plus no doubt some college tuition coverage), if I were Tewes I'd have done the same thing -- and I'm even one who likes to see players err on the side of staying in school. But this choice seems pretty easy to me.

I think he still would have had plenty of leverage but not even knowing who your pitching coach was going to be had to be a factor.

When did he ever throw 95? Guess I missed that day.

Bonus compared to slot would suggest leverage was not as good as you guys would like to think. Or maybe he was feeling charitable toward the Cards?

I believe that Sam was a Kemnitz recruit. I don't know if this was a factor or not but it could have been.

                      Likely.

No, actually, I don't -- It's just that given Sam's situation, I would have taken the cash in hand from one of the best organizations in baseball rather than running the risk of further injury. That decision isn't about leverage.

Pual Suellentrop has reported that Chase Williams (35th round) has signed with the Brewers and John Hayes (25th round) has signed with the Tigers. They both have a lot of work to move up in the professional ranks.

Milwaukee's website confirms Chase's signing. However, Detroit's website still lists John as unsigned.

In any case, I wish them well in pursuit of their baseball dreams.

Of course it is. Negotiation leverage is 100% about each sides best alternative option. Sam's sucked and everyone involved in the process knew it. I'm not saying he didn't make the obvious and right decision. I'm saying he had no leverage to negotiate even average market wages for that decision.
