That would put Sam around the 6th round (Friday) and Willie around the 17th round (Saturday). If that holds I would expect both to sign.

Sam has a load of talent but my goodness that seems high for someone with his recent injury history.

I was a bit surprised as well but pro drafts have as much to do with potential as they have to do with performance. Not sure how accurate this list will prove to be as there has to be a lot of guess and by golly that goes into a list this extensive.

Tommy John surgery has become so common in this day and age and so many pitchers make successful comebacks that it probably just doesn't scare teams off the way it may have a decade or so back.

So you are saying that the one Tommy John surgery was the result of two years missed. Because he missed all of 2015 because of an injury and then he had supposedly healed and then after a couple of starts, he missed the rest of 2016. All this was due to the same injury?

No, not saying that at all. The Tommy John surgery is clearly to repair the elbow injury sustained in 2016. I have no idea if the knee injury at the 2014 MVC Tournament, the 2015 shoulder inflammation that ended his season or the 2016 elbow injury are related or not. I have no idea whether those injuries caused Sam to maybe tweak his mechanics that contributed to the subsequent injuries or whether it shows he is fragile or whether it was just bad luck. Not sure anyone could answer that with any degree of certainty. That is why I am a bit surprised this source listed him so early. It remains to be seen whether he will, in fact, be picked that early.

Sam wasn't exactly sharp in his 4 appearances in 2016 with a 7.36 ERA prior to going on the shelf. At the time I attributed that to rustiness. Maybe he was just never right but again I have no way of knowing that.

He was a 22nd round draft pick out of high school but I think that was mostly due to questions about his signability. He seemed committed to going the college route.

MSU Sr. RHP Sam Perez went quite a bit higher than SB Nation's projection in the 5th round at #143.

DBU Jr. OF David Martinelli did go in the 6th round at #167. About 30 slots below where SB Nation pegged him which is actually pretty close.

Sam Tewes has not gone yet as Round 7 is nearly finished

Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 8th round.

STLCards select (8th Round, 256th overall) Sam Tewes, RHP, Wichita State University (Lincoln, NE)

I would say that is a very good draft for Sam. I wish him luck with his rehab and his professional career. It's a shame we saw so little of Sam during his 3 years as a Shocker.

As expected no Shocker recruits were drafted in the first 10 rounds.

I wouldn't for a second not sign with them if I were him.
A couple injury plagued years and still drafted in the 8th round by what has been a good organization and being in the Midwest it could be someone he watched growing up (being from Nebraska and playing here)
