So far nobody seems to want the DH spot. It's a difficult job. Not only are you not as much "in the game" as the position players, but nobody is getting to play every day.
With Kenny Williams in left field, here are the options:
Clint is off to a slow start, but I'm bullish on Clint and think he will be an excellent hitter. The knock on Clint is that he is a line-drive hitter who doesn't get much loft and therefore is not likely to hit many home runs. He runs exceptionally well for his size, but he's not a burner like Lassley or Hall. We all know how much Gene likes speed.
Bret Bascue is an exceptional defensive outfielder who can play any of the three outfield spots, and has shown flashes where we see that he has the potential to be a good hitter. He is hitting .267 on 4 for 15. He has also shown good patience, drawing 4 walks. He has by far the highest OBP of any of the available hitters at .421.
Kyle Sisney would not be a prototypical DH, but he has been described as a switch-hitting GNAT at the plate. I forget which pitcher, but one of our starting pitchers told me he could never get Sisney out in intrasquad games. I am surprised he hasn't had a few more at-bats.
I don't know enough about the freshmen to speak intelligently to their abilities as hitters. I have heard that Gene is high on Engrav and Hall, and we have seen those two get the most AB's among the freshmen in the early going.
With Kenny Williams in left field, here are the options:
- Cody Lassley - Redshirt sophomore. Hits right. Has speed and some pop. Hitting .208 in 24 at-bats. #2 catcher.
- Clint McKeever - Redshirt sophomore. Bats right, big, strong, quick hands, line-drive hitter. Hitting just .150 on 3 for 20. #2 first-baseman.
- Bret Bascue - Redshirt sophomore. Bats right, .421 on-base percentage, excellent outfielder.
- Kevin Hall - Freshman. Bats right. Fast, good (or better) outfielder.
- Ryan Engrav - Freshman. Bats right. 0-6 with a walk and 3 strikeouts. #3 catcher.
- Kyle Sisney - Redshirt freshman. Switch hitter. 0-5 with a walk. #2 second baseman.
- Mitch Caster - Freshman. Bats right. 0-3 with a HBP, 2 RBI. Outfielder.
- Taylor Brown - Freshman. Bats right. Has had just two plate appearances - is 0-1 with a walk. #2 shortstop.
- Grant Muncrief - Freshman. Bats right. Just one at-bat. #2 third baseman.
