I am interested to see how this weekend goes. Good non-conference weekend series. Maybe the guys can clear their minds and relax and play some ball. New Mexico has played a good schedule. They have a similar record against the top 50 (WSU 2-8, UNM 3-7). Where the Lobos have really stood out is against the 51-100 group (WSU 1-7, UNM 7-4).
I have heard a lot of people say the Shocks are young this year but really we aren’t that young, we are inexperienced. The Lobos are truly a good, young team with a seemingly bright future. They start 2-3 Fr and 3-4 So in the field and 2 of their 3 starting pitchers are Fr as well as their closer. These are not just Fr filling spots, these are guys that are among the team leaders. 5 of their 6 top hitters are Fr and So and all are hitting .291 or better facing a stronger schedule than WSU. They also have lots of extra base hits. Doubles (UNM -94, WSU 65), Triples (UNM -16, WSU - 4), Homeruns (UNM -18, WSU -23).
Freshman
C/DH - Cory Voss - .375, 11 doubles, 5 triples, 4 HR, 30 RBI
3B - Carl Stajduhar - .302, 17 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 HRs
OF - Reese Weber - .321, 9 hits, 8 runs, 2 doubles, 6 RBIs in 28 ABs
Sophomores
1B/3B - Chris DeVito - .353, 14 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HRs, 38 RBI
CF - Danny Collier - .345, 3 doubles, 2 triples
1B - Jack Zoellner - .333, 10 doubles, 2 triples
OF - Lane Milligan - .291, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 29 RBI
EDIT: One other thing I noticed when looking at the UNM stats is that there are 3 guys in the line up with more BB/HBP than SO and a 4th guy that is just a few away. For comparison, our only person that is even close is Ryan Tinkham and that is because he has the honor of 10 HBP to go with 19 BB against 27 SO. In other words our pitchers better take the weekend off from giving out free passes like a mall kiosk employee hands out samples because it appears UNM feeds off of free base runners.
