It is a practical matter. No rules but lots of rules of thumb I suppose. For starting pitchers WSU usually likes to have 4-days rest between starts (assuming a normal number of pitches) but this time of year they will go with 3-days rest. For relievers it will depend a lot on how many innings they pitch and how many pitches they throw. When they count days rest they count day in between games. So for example, Cale Elam pitched Tuesday. If we make it to the Championship game on Saturday Cale will pitch that game. That would be considered 3-days rest (Wed + Thur + Fri). For a closer who generally pitches only 1 inning at a time they can pitch almost every game if needed. Again a lot depends on pitch counts and how much they throw in the bullpen warming up.
