      Thanks, ASM -- Fire up the tracker. Just don't accidentally lock on to Ainge's plane instead.

          • Mike Hargrove.

            * Currently an advisor for the Cleveland Indians
            * Cleveland Indians manager 1991-1999
            * Baltimore Orioles manager 2000-2003
            * Seattle Mariners manager 2005-2007
            * Managed Liberal Beejays (2007-2009)
            * Played for Liberal (1972)
            * Family in Liberal
            * Played college ball at Northwestern Oklahahoma State
            * Knows the midwest and has the scouts to recruit the hell out of it.
            * Knows Brent, appeases the boosters & ex-players, huge fund-raiser, ability to stand alongside Gene's shadow & not in it
            * Big time hire (isn't that what BK said last night?)

            He fits all the criteria & BK knows everybody. Don't be surprised if Hargrove gets a call.

              I think he's too old. Need young blood.

                • Rice coach Wayne Graham is 76. They are in a Super Regional. Whether or not Hargrove wants to move away from his granddaughter is a question.

                  In 2008, the "kids" thought this of then 58 year old Hargrove:

                  "He turned me into a much better catcher and a much better hitter in just a matter of minutes," Clint Ewing said. "We ask him questions all the time."

                  Said infielder Bryce Baugh, "When he starts talking, everybody starts listening. How could you not listen to a guy who's managed in the World Series, who's managed players like Cal Ripken and Jim Thome?"

                  Hargrove has spent most of his time around the batting cage.

                  "When you manage in the major leagues, you don't do very much teaching," Hargrove said. "I'm getting a kick out of it."

                  "Our goal is to get into the National Baseball Congress tournament, and to have them be better players when they go back to the college than they were when they left," Hargrove said.

                  Orlin Wagner/Associated PressMike Hargrove left a successful team in Seattle just a year ago having lost his willingness to compete as the Mariners' manager. But in returning to his roots in Liberal, Kan., Hargrove is reveling in a non-paying job...

                  • Mike's wife would move to Wichita in a minute. Mike is a different story.

                    He is a great human being, and a brilliant teacher of the game. My question is whether he wants to recruit. He was a little uncomfortable with that idea at Liberal.

                    Hargrove would win big. My question is whether that's the direction he wants to go.

                      • Mike isn't the sort of person to sub-contract out anything. If he's running a program, it will be his players.

                        With that said, he took two rosters at Liberal that were woefully short of NBC title-caliber talent - even in its current Wingnuts-diluted state - and had them playing even with strong talent at Anchorage and Santa Barbara.

                        He would be an oustanding choice. I'll be surprised if he's even interested.

                          No mention of Standiford while including PJ Forbes and Andy Sawyers could be interpreted as a bit of a slight.

                              If I was the AD, I would insist that recruiting is carried out by all of the coaches.

                              For greater detail on this practice, see Coach Marshall.
