I get that type of thing in MLB playoffs. Beyond that, there's really no cause for it, ever. But particularly for a below-average collegiate pitching staff, it's just plain stupid. If somebody comes out of the pen and isn't giving the game away, maybe let them go a few outs.

It seems like against RPI 150+ teams our young and inexperienced pitchers can pull off the left/right pitch-by-committee approach because the hitters aren't nearly as good. But against top 50 teams in the country -- and even top 100 teams -- there's no way we are deep enough for that to work. We definitely have some talent. I think we might even have enough talent to do some damage. But we just aren't keeping the talent -- especially the guys that are "on" -- in there long enough.

We're responsible for our own outcome. But sometimes things just don't go your way, and there's a lot of that with us right now.
UTSA is pretty much the clear 2 in the league. I don't know how an unbiased person watches that game last night and doesn't think we're even or better than they are.
Even ignoring the foot off the bag (that's rarely called I know) in the first that probably doesn't amount to anything even if reversed:
Top 4 we can't get the ball in play with 1 out and runners at 2nd and 3rd, or a 2 out hit to really open up the game.
Bottom 6 with one out, Tommy gets a foul ball that falls in the middle of 3 WSU players. 2 pitches that miss the zone by a combined 2 inches and they have a runner on instead of 2 out nobody on. A fly ball out and it's seemingly no problem, runner on 1st, 2 out. 300 pound singles hitting Olivo is up. 0-2. Tommy looks great. Next pitch is a little wider than I would have liked as P109 but anyway, the next he just pokes to left. Good piece of hitting against a great pitch. 1st and 2nd. First pitch is a high strike called a ball. Grrr. 2nd pitch is on the black outside across the plate. Ball 2. Tommy is PISSED. Mound meeting to calm him. Don't blame him one bit. Next IS wide. 3-0. Should be 2-1 or 1-2. Rain starts, hard. Strike. 3-1. Ball just outside and low (close). POURING NOW. Bases loaded 2 outs. Delay. Also, Hunter is hot and ready to go. Now he waits 45 minutes.
Hunter is in vs a righty. Strike. Ground ball to the right that takes a weird hop, bobbled, CLEARLY an error not a hit as scored, and they score 2 with the big guy somehow chugging around 3rd. LITERALLY nothing bounced or called our way. They got 1 soft single and scored 2. Hunter gets out of any more damage on a really nice play by Camden.
Top 7 now 3-1 UTSA on bullshit. Camden Ks. Luikhart PHs and gets a good swing but long out. 2 out. Haworth goes yard. 3-2. Jordo looks at ball 1 called strike. Foul ball. 0-2. Strike 3 called ball 1. Almost takes one in the melon 2-2. Ball 3. Foul. Full count. Ball 4 in the dirt that he almost swung at. Tying run on. Derek Williams represents the go ahead run. Ball outside. Ball 2 in the dirt. Pitching coach in a walmart T shirt walks out with a tongue depressor covered in vaseline to help his pitcher. **** all over the ball now. Ball 3 (could have been a strike). Strike. 3-1. Throw to 1st almost gets Jordo. Dropped though. Strike 2 swinging. Full count. Fouled off. Derek goes yard.
Yes, you heard me, THAT WAS A HOME RUN OFF THE NETTING. The netting keeps it in the park. Not sure how that's NOT a home run. I've watched it 20 times, it's close, without netting, it's out. 4-3 Shocks. They look at it and keep it as a double. 3-3. UFB If there's any decent (and by decent I mean not high schoolish) lighting or facilities that cost more than my she shed, these douchebag umps would see it was a home run (or there's not netting over the fence WTF). DJ flies out. 3-3.
Bottom 7 another barely make contact guy dribbles one that Camden makes yet another good play on and it's one out. Strike on the corner is ball 1. Ball 2. Foul. Should be 1-2, it's 2-1. Way outside is 3-1. Ball outside and it's a 1 out walk. Foul. If HH throws his pitches, 15 for UTSA has zero chance. NONE. HH misses a touch and 15 gets a great swing to be honest and gets a hit, but it's really fortunate. 2 on 1 out. Strike. Foul. 0-2. Again, this guy has no chance if Hunter doesn't make a big mistake. Ball outside. 1-2. Ground ball off the plate that Hunter fields 5 feet off the plate and he's safe by half a stride. UFB. Bases full. Munz is in, ground ball played beautifully by Camden and gets the out at home, no chance for a DP. Great play. Drew's not hot. But he's coming in anyway. Still 3-3, bases loaded, 2 out now. Here we go. Ball 1 should have been a WP, great pick up by Millan. 1-0. Ball 2 nearly hits him. Strike 1 is ball 3. Grrrr. 3-0. Same EXACT pitch is a strike. Should be 2-2. But it's 3-1. Ball 4 misses by maybe an inch, it's low, but not a lot lower than where Olivo's gut hangs over his belt. A million times you see a guy get rung up when he just stands there on a borderline pitch because he's just not swinging the bat. Horseshit. RBI 4-3 UTSA. Guy doesn't take the bat off his shoulders and is given a walk. UFB. Also UFB Munz is out but whatever. Mound meeting. Jack Mount in. First pitch is grounded under Camden's glove. He made so many great plays, but doesn't get one step over to keep the ball in his glove and it's a 2 run error. 6-3. 2nd and 3rd still 2 out. Ball. Ball, Strike. Ball. Foul. Foul. Strike looking because these overmatched ******* won't swing the bat. 6-3 after 7.
Shocks go quietly in the 8th. UTSA weak ground ball that almost causes Jordo an injury (wet field from playing in the rain too long and again, shitty facilities). Ball, strike, called strike (basically the same pitch height called ball 4 vs Olivo last inning) strike. 2 out. Ball. Strike (maybe wide) foul, foul, foul, foulout. 6-3 to the 9th. Jack Mount was very good.
Top 9. Lane up there feeling good. Strike. Home run, just like the last one. 6-4. Great piece of hitting going the other way, again. Jordo. Ball. Ball 2 is called a strike. NEVER was over the plate. MAYBE ball 3 called strike 2. It was closer but higher. 1-2, could be 3-0. Flyout. We get almost zero close calls. 1 out 6-4. DW outside strike (great pitch). Ball outside. 1-1. Ball outside. 2-1. Clearly they are going to pitch DW away all weekend. Ball 3. Center cut is lost. 6-5. He's seeing the ball well. Dayvin up. Ball 1. Ball 2. Ball 3. Mound meeting. Ball 4. Might be more WSU fans here than UTSA (again, high schoolish). Mo up. Tying run on 1st, one out. Pitching change. Ball 5. Strike, outside edge gift. Ball 7. 2-1. Down and nearly wide, not as good a pitch as Olivo walked on but called a strike. 2-2. Easily could have been ball 8. Gus up, drills one by right at the 2B. Ground ball out, game over.
Best team lost.
We control the outcome. Completely responsible for the loss. But UTSA was so lucky and handed the dub.
Come on guys, you know you're the better talent, team, program. Sweep 2 today.
Rice and Charlotte played 2 because of impending weather. Standings are:
ECU 15-4 as they run ruled USF
UTSA 13-6 all luck
Charlotte 11-9 after the DH sweep of Rice
Tulane 10-9 beating Memphis
FAU 9-10 after being run ruled at home by UAB
USF 8-11
UAB 8-11
WSU 8-11
Rice 8-12
Memphis 6-14
Conference records in 1-2 run games vs other games.
ECU 3-4 12-0 (somewhat unlucky in close games, otherwise dominant)
UTSA 5-1 8-5 (never know what you'll get, very, very lucky)
UNCC 5-2 6-7 (pretty lucky)
Tulane 1-3 9-6 (you live by the pinball scoreboard and you die by it too)
FAU 5-2 4-8 (pretty lucky to be 3 games over .500 in close games when you suck)
USF 4-1 4-10 (sheesh)
UAB 3-5 5-6 (seems to make sense)
WSU 1-6 7-5 (say what you want, but that's unlucky)
Rice 4-7 3-5 (seems to make sense, maybe a tad unlucky)
Mem 4-5 2-7 (maybe lucky to have 6 wins)
ECU is dominant and maybe a shade unlucky and we're very unlucky and not ready to win apparently.
I'm calling it right now. If we win 2 today, we're playing for the title on Sunday in Clearwater.
