I totally know what a passed ball is.

But how should I explain that to my friend that doesn't really know that much about baseball?

A passed ball is "catchable" pitch that the catcher misplays and it bounces off his glove or otherwise gets by him. A wild pitch is pitch that is in the turf or so wide or high that it is very difficult to catch and gets away from the catcher. Wild pitches are much more common than passed balls.

They are only ruled passed balls or wild pitches if at least one runner advances to the next base.
