Paul Suellentrop‏@PaulSuellentrop WSU baseball news: OF Garrett Bayliff had ankle surgery Wednesday. Won't play this fall. Expected to be ready in January.

You just wonder if things are going to work out for Garrett. Hopefully, things will finally go his way.

          Report on Bayliffe's surgery:
Wichita State outfielder Garrett Bayliff walked into coach Gene Stephenson’s office and got a big hug. Stephenson was happy to see him. He will be even happier if Bayliff’s ankle surgery — his third — is a success.

Bayliff underwent surgery on his right ankle on Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C. and is on crutches. He will not practice this fall. Stephenson hopes he will be healthy when the Shockers begin practices in January. Stephenson said the procedure removed loose bodies and scar tissue from the ankle, originally injured early in the 2011 season.

“(The surgeon) is very optimistic that the ankle itself is stable,” Stephenson said. “He felt like within four months he would have a complete recovery.”

Bayliff, a redshirt junior from Tuttle, Okla., played six games in 2011 before being injured sliding into second base. He played 21 last season before ankle pain shut him down for the rest of the spring. He did not play this summer.

“It will be a major recovery story after going through what he’s gone through,” Stephenson said. “We’re all hoping and praying that he will be in a position where he can realize some of his dreams. Nobody’s worked harder.”

Made it out to Game 1 today. What can you really tell from one fall intrasquad game. Nothing much, but I guess that has never stopped me expressing an opinion before. The Black team won 7-3 scoring 5 runs off of Foster Vielock in the 8th inning.

First of all, what a great afternoon for a baseball game. Generally, I came away from the game thinking that this will look very much like last year's team. If we are going to be better, it will be because our returning core will be better. You can write in Casey Gillaspie, Johnny Coy, Dayne Parker, Erik Harbutz into the infield/DH spots.

Who will play the outfield and how much production we get from the outfielder's remains a big question. Micah Green probably looks to be the best of the bunch. After that, who knows. Garrett Bayliffe remains a big question mark there also. Who knows, maybe Casey ends up in RF, Johnny at 1B and Garrett at DH as the Eagle article suggested today.

Of the newcomers the only one that caught my eye today was Chase Simpson, the transfer from OU, who played for the Gold team. Let's hope the Black team was responsible for playing Boomer Sooner as Chase's pre-AB music.

Cale Elam started for the Black and pitched 5 scoreless innings giving up 4 hits. Cale was solid. Drew Palmer, the Cowley County transfer, pitched 1 inning allowing 2 hits and 1 run, but he was hit pretty hard including a rocket right at his head by Tanner Kirk that he was just able to deflect to Tanner Dearman at 2B who through him out at 1st. Drew wasn't too impressive. McGreevey pitched the 7th and gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks but picked up the win despite his somewhat sloppy inning. Kris Gardner pitched a scoreless 8th but he gave up 2 hits and a walk and had to work his way out of a bases loaded jam. Aaron Labrie pitched the 9th and game up a run a couple of hits but the Gold team hit him very hard that inning.

For the Gold team Toby Mateychick pitched 4 scoreless innings of one hit ball and looks like he could be pretty effective if he can keep his pitches down. Brandon Peterson, the Juco transfer from DMACC, pitched two innings and showed he does have a very storng arm. The question with him will be command as his Juco stats suggested. He gave up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks. After pitching a scoreless 7th the wheels kind of fell off the wagon for Vielock. He gave up a BB, a line-out to CF, a single, a double,a BB, a single, got a K for the 2nd out but then followed that with a BB and another single. I thought Foster lost his composure a little when he did not get a called 3rd strike early in the inning (which he probably deserved). Minnis finished up for the Gold allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 9th after getting the final out of the 8th on 1 pitch in an outing the made your wonder who will be the closer if Elam moves to the starting rotation.

We were debating whether the pitching was that good and the hitting that bad. Elam and Mateychick looked good. Vielock and Minnis did not pitch well which is disappointing for these veterans of the program. Harbutz had a nice day. The only new guy that impressed me was Chase Simpson. He hit the ball hard most if not AB's and was robbed by the umpire when his double down the line was called foul by the napping umpire. But he looks like his glove and range might be an issue. Gillaspie looks like he should have some power with the way he's built - he had one "just missed it" pop-up.

I was sitting right in line with the left field line and I thought the ump made the right call on Simpson's ball. It was close but it looked like a foul from my viewpoint. I do agree with you otherwise that Chase was the most impressive of the newcomers. IF Gillaspie can play some RF with Johnny sliding into the 1B slot then Chase, a switch-hitter could be valuable as a DH.

Not sure but I thought as a transfer from Oklahoma Simpson had to sit out a year.
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

We were speculating about whether that was the case or not.

But if he does have to sit out then I wonder why play him in the series and take away playing time from somebody else that you might be wanting to getting looks at?

                              from shockwaves:

"Oklahoma transfer Chase Simpson plays 3B and will likely sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules. WSU may look into appealing to the NCAA for a waiver for Simpson, who can also play 1B and 2B."
