Payton Tolle was absolutely masterful today. The wind blowing in and ECU loading up their lineup with lefties didn't hurt but Payton took total advantage against a very good college baseball team.
No runs, 2 hits, one a seeing eye grounder to left and the other a bunt single that Payton took too much time on, 1 error when Payton dropped a one hopper on the glove to hand exchange. 10 strikeouts and no, none, zero, zilch, nada walks as he faced only 3 batter over the minimum in a 9-inning complete game. Payton threw a total of 108 pitches and 80 of those were strikes.
Who had that on their bingo card for this one.
Maybe we don't want Payton htting when he is pitching.
Kudos to the offense as well. 7 runs on 15 hits inlcuding 2 home runs and 3 doubles with only 5 strikeouts. The Shocks did not go down in order until the 7th.
I am not sure that the Shocker are capable of playing any better and why would you need to. The questions is can we approach this kind of performance more consistently.
