However, I’m not totally sold on the metrics, especially at the college level. It isnt always right, but you are the first in a long time to call it out on Shockernet.
The answer is simple - there is really not much difference between Houston and WSU. Their ISR is less than 2 points in difference which means their games are flip of coin (50/50). WSU beating OSU only around a 15% probability, but 15% is not 0%.
But here none of the metrics believers, gave an explanation on why you are wrong.
The scouting report did not have enough data?
The pitcher made bad pitches that allowed the shift to be defeated?
They were lucky?

Gregg might not have been a veteran, but you’d definitely want him in your Fox hole in a war."You Just Want to Slap The #### Outta Some People"

Gene’s biggest downfall might have been accepting/declining the OU job; that decision took some momentum away from the program. The Ben Christensen incident also caused more of a black-eye than most want to admit. Recruiting became more difficult as anti-recruiting took over. Unfortunately, BC was the instigator, leaving Gene and staff in an unfortunate position; coaches (including Gene) didn’t want to throw Ben under the bus and supported him. It was a no-win situation as the media and Molina crucified Gene, Brent and the program. Not sure Ben was ever the same; he flamed out early in his MLB career. He was like 20-1 at WSU and was destined for stardom. All that crap still sticks in my craw today.
Brummett throws, STRUCK HIM OUT! THE SHOCKERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY!

None of the 3 Houston runs in the 1st resulted from a ball hit through an empty left side. The Houston run in the 5th was the result of a ball hit through an empty left side although with the shortstop holding the runner on 2nd that ball may have gotten through even without a shift as it was a well hit low liner toward the hole.
However, in the decisive 13-run 7th inning the only time the Shocks put on the shift was against a righthanded hitter with the 2nd baseman, Rodden, playing up the middle and shortstop, Herring, playing in the hole. That batter hit the ball right at Herring. Unfortunately, it was a solid line drive over his head for a base hit.
The Shocks had a little bad luck early in that inning. With one out a Houston runner that had reached on hit by pitch was called out attempting to steal 2nd but on review the call was reversed and he probably was safe. Not real wild about how Herring received the throw and delivered the tag but it was a good slide by the Houston runner to just barely sneak a hand to the base before the tag. The next batter hit a slow, swing bunt roller towards short that Herring made a terrific bare-handed pick up and throw but the runner just did beat that out. Herring probably made it closer than it should have been. After getting the 2nd out on a strike out, the wheels pretty much came off. Kung Wu a lot of the 5 pitching changes in that inning appeared to be looking for lefty vs lefty and righty vs righty matchups. But the pitching was so bad it really didn't matter.
So the shift might have contributed to 1 of Houston's 17 runs in the game. The big factor IMO was that the Shockers simply could not make the pitches when they absolutely needed to. 16 of Houston's 17 runs scored with 2 outs.Last edited by 1972Shocker; April 11, 2023, 06:50 PM.
