I'm sorry that every league in the freaking world gives out an automatic bid to the winner of their tourney. I guess you better call the NCAA and tell them to change their ways.

WSU and 6 other teams had a chance to "steal a bid" and didn't do crap. It really sounds like you're being a sore loser here. CU simply out played everyone else this time around. I'm not asking you to be happy about it, but crap happens.

This is one of the very few times that the Valley has invited everyone to the tournament. (I think maybe only the second time). For most years, the Valley had 9 teams and only the top 6 got invited.

I think it is wrong to invite your bottom teams. If you do, then the other teams should have some kind of advantage (like in basketball where the bottom 4 teams have to play an extra game). I think this year's tourney (and last years) where you invite everyone with no real advantage to the top teams totally cheapens the regular season.

      • Definitely agree with you that the regular season is out the window in the Valley's current format, 1989. To their credit, Creighton -- which frankly underperformed all year and was supposed to be better -- took advantage of the league's generosity. But it still raises the question, what's the reward for having a good regular season? Even a poor team can have an excellent pitcher (as CU did this year in Blach), and what you end up with then is the regular season champ getting what may be a nasty matchup problem in their tourney opener, which is exactly what happened.

Of course, this is the same league whose stupid egalitarian obsession with "fairness" (in reality, randomness) leads them to hand out the conference tournament to schools that will do well to draw as many fans all week as WSU (or for that matter Omaha, assuming their rental palace is available) will get in one day. I'd like to see them drop the bottom two teams and play 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5 on opening day with the losers playing a knockout game and the winners moving on to meet 2 and 1. That would create a slightly harder bracket to manage than a straight six-team tournament (which can also get funky because of the loser-winner matchup in the second round), but it's by no means impossible, and at least it would reward regular season success. In the current format, your reward is basically getting to wear the home colors on opening day.

Sore loser? Not really. I've already been on record to say that WSU sucked it up to no end and sealed their own fate. However, you seem to be the type that is defending Creighton to make a point to slam WSU. Are you saying you'd rather have WSU being a Stony Brook or Coppin State and just be a get-hot-at-the-right-type of team and just concentrate on conference tournaments or put together strong seasons that give them chance at bids beyond automatic ones? I'm sorry, but Creighton is a horrible team that got hot late. Is that what you want WSU to be? Woohoo, sCUm is going dancing, but they look like a freaking MEAC team with their results. I'd prefer WSU to NOT strive for that area.

And to say that Creighton's coach is so awesome when in fact they clearly underachieved during the season and got bailed out at the last minute. If you want to make a point against the coaching staff at WSU, then go for it. But your Creighton comparison was God-awful and terrible. Do better.

          ... No really, deuces.

          • This has nothing to do with what I want WSU to be. The point is CU got in. They did what they had to do and we didn't. I am not a CU supporter. I actually really dislike CU.

            • I think Indy State may have been punished for their 0-2 Valley tourney showing by being sent clear to Oregon rather than getting to stay near home and playing in Gary, Indiana.

Frankly, Indiana State didn't deserve to be in the tournament. They played a weak non-conference schedule and were fortunate that SWMO had a game rained out or they likely don't win the regular season and get their ticket punched.

When they went 2-1 against DBU at home is when they seemed to pop up on everybody's radar as a potential at large team. Until then they were pretty much going unnoticed.

I'd take them over a bunch of other teams that got in and others that were out. I'd take em over WSU, Charleston, Michigan State, just to name a few. You have to get to 64 teams. I don't think you can argue anybody else taking their spot. They may have sucked it up at the end of the year, but we've done that before with good teams. The fact is they did win the 5th-rated RPI conference. If it was us, there's no question what we'd think of the situation.

                    • So what were the final totals for attendance in Southern Missouri?

They're still counting the gate, partly because there were so many who attended and partly because Southern Missourians are counting.

They ran into a little snag and apparently are now working on a recount. One of the MSU staffers was assigned the duty to count the gate at the MVC Tournament. He found there were 4 entrance gates to the park for the fans but he wasn't sure if he should count the gates to the bullpen or not. In any case, they are trying to get a ruling from the MVC on exactly what gates should be counted.

                            • Max attendance in any session - 1390
                              Average all sessions - 693
                              Championship Game - 438

Graph is the reported attendance for each Session in 2012. Plotted against attendance in 2009 at Eck for the WSU games.

                              • Pretty bad considering this was one of MSU's all-time greatest teams and 2009 was one of WSU's all-time worst teams.
