Short version . . . if you are pitching for WSU, pitch like it.

Cruising through 4 IP and then coming unglued after giving up solo shot is unacceptable.

An experienced reliever who strikes out one of the leagues best hitters to end an inning and then blows up the next is unacceptable.

Said there were excuses that could have been made for both (seeing eye grounder hits, etc) but the bottom line is having the demeanor to figure out a way to battle and win.

He was frustrated with how the pitchers responded to adversity and their inability to keep their composure / killer instinct on the hill.

Basically, stuff happens. Move on and take it to the other guy. Don't mope around and blow the game wide open. Don't give the opposing hitters hope by showing that these things affect you. Just bear down and take it to the next hitter like nothing happened and show that you are still in control.

He was happy with the relievers after McGreevy.

Of all the things to be sour about this season, pitching is not one of them. They've demonstrated all year that they're the one facet in the Shox's game that actually pulls its own weight. A blow up every now and then happens in baseball. They've kept the Shox in a lot of games so I give them a pass.

I predict they'll continue to do their 'thang' for the rest of the year. Unless of course they start getting tired of not getting any run support or defensive help behind them.

Pitch Calling?

Bouman and Vale pitched inside then worked outer 1/2 of the Plate. Shane made reference of this on the broadcast. As A team they need to pitch in to Win. Pitch calling may have had something to do with the meltdown. Just a thought you can be dominate the 1st time thru the order pitching middle to outer half but second time through need to mix it up!

Oh, and @Ta town:, now you know why I thought the game could be interesting. It wasn't a nono, but Maldonaldo did pitch a complete game. He had pitched well in all but one game this year and he continued that.

I never said that I wanted him over any of the other starters we had at the time, but felt this was an important game for WSU to win mentally. I'm sure the team was reminded of Maldonaldo's former status, whether it was a favorable parting or not. WSU failed on pretty much all facets. Now, it makes a victory today even more crucial. This team is tetering on disaster for a WSU team and mentally, they know it. Losing 2 of 3 this weekend would add to the pressure. Some teams rise above the pressure, others fold. Here's to hoping the team has a quality win today and can put game 2 behind them.

We've now played 18 straight games at home and are 10-8 during that stretch.

All signs are beginning to point towards this being Gene's first losing season.

Again not sure what angle you are trying to take with Maldanldo, I explained who was going to be ahead of him for his first few years and frankly I would have taken those guys over him. This year ok maybe but I don't know, big deal he held the friging shockers to 3 runs over a game, not exactly tearing it up. I don't think anybody chased him out of town. So again what is your point?

Cameron has nothing to do with the shockers sucking. This game wasn't a turning point in the season. This game wasn't some statement game. WSU baseball is dead and will probably forever be even if Gene wises up and retires. Makes me sick to my stomach and blows my mind that the rest of the valley can find hitters but the shockers can't. It's gotta be a coaching thing, a mental approach thing, a toughness thing because it's not like these kids didn't hit when compared to fellow players in high school. They get here and Gene platoons their azzes like it's MLB, refuses to bunt and apparently refuses to work on bunting as a whole because they sure as heck can't do it when asked. I just don't get it...got recruit some effing baseball players and not a bunch of guys who can run well.

I will say I like some of the freshman and even a few of the sophomore hitters but somethings gotta change.

The point is, Maldonaldo was buried in our pitching staff just a few years ago, a time when WSU had already gone down hill quite a ways. Today, he pitches for another Valley team and is good enough to beat us. SIU is a team we should be sweeping at home with at least one or two of the games being somewhat easy. That is not the case and I agree with most all of your post. It may be harder to compete against the rest of the college world, but that's no excuse for not continuing to dominate the Valley.
