He recruited the guys that can't get the big hit. It is all on him. Don't think for one second that it isn't GS telling the players whether to swing for the fence or bunt. He makes the calls. He doesn't make the right one most of the time and he is responsible for recruiting the guys that just aren't what WSU has had in the past. This team isn't good and it all lies on GS.
If Gene doesn't deserve any blame for the state of the program today than he doesn't deserve any credit for the previous success of the program (and I don't believe that's the case).
I'm sure recruiting has become much more difficult since 2005 when Gene publicly said he could not win at WSU anymore and I'm quite sure opposing coaches aren't bashful about using Gene's own words against him to this very day.
Of course, recruiting is now greatly compromised by that fact that Gene is a lame duck with no transition structure in place.
When Gene left for OU in 2005 the most common opinion was one of surprise but also that it was also probably time for a change in leadership. Now the consensus seems to be one of apathy and that 2005 was an opportunity lost. The primary discussion surrounding the program now is when Gene will be replaced (not should Gene be replaced).
Bottom line is something has to give. The only question remaining is do we bite the bullet, buy Gene out at the end of this season and move on next year or leave Gene in place for another year and dig the hole being left for his successor a little deeper.
Gene deserves kudos for building a very good baseball program from scratch and for many years of great success and I have no problem honoring him appropriately when he departs. He also bears the responsibility for many less than positive things over the years including the current state of apathy surrounding the program.
I very much look forward to new energy, enthusiasm and positive vibe being breathed into Shocker baseball, whether that's a month from now or a year from now.
Our team batting average is .288 which ranks them 65th in the nation.
Our team ERA is 3.62 good for 76th in the nation.
Our team fielding % is .976, good for 18th in the country.
To me, in comparison to the rest of the teams against which we are competing, we field in the top 7% of the country, we bat in the top 3rd, and we pitch in the top 3rd. We've played a below average schedule. Our record should be pretty solid, no?
Our RPI is 180.
To me, and I am NOT even close to being an expert, that looks like either bad coaching or horrible luck.

I agree with your post, except for one possible item, and that depends on what Gene, himself, decides to do.
I will have a problem honoring him appropriately when he departs if he takes the position of screwing the program he built. If he feels it's more important to hold the baseball program hostage and make the situation all about him, than a graceful transition, one that he may still be able to have a hand in helping find/groom WSU's next coach. If he decides to gig WSU for all it's worth rather than working for a smooth transition and keeping his legend intact.
IMHO, Krusty and Krew have dug their own hole and have no one, or no excuse, to blame. I don't hold him responsible for the Christenson incident, however, his remarks of trying to justify it were totally wrong and began his long fall. It's one thing to leave for OU and something altogether different to make a comment that could be used against WSU's next coach. Well, when WSU took him back he turned out to be that next coach and it was used against him. Oh yes, there was also the "other woman" situation that got plastered all over the paper.
No, WSU and fans of WSU baseball have given more than enough rope. Now he appears to feel he's owed by WSU to be the highest paid/worst performing coach out there. The door is quickly shutting. If WSU baseball, its fans, and the grand era of baseball he built mean anything to him, he best work with WSU very soon. Otherwise, for me, thanks Gene for what you did for us and no thanks for what you've now done for us.
